AMD plans to invest $135 million to expand its operations in Ireland

The Republic of Ireland is a HUGE tax haven for these companies, that's the real reason they picked ROI.

It's might be one of the reasons but not 'the' reason, typically higher on a companies agenda would be access to an educated workforce, access to a technically competent workforce, access to EU, English speaking, stable government, sensibly run referenda - I could go on :) that Ireland was chosen for this investment.

They did already have a presence there, and expanding something that exists is a lot easier than building something new. It is also worth noting that Ireland has a big tech sector, Intel has fabs in Ireland.

Ireland also has the perks of having a native English-speaking populace, a lot of University educated people, and a very cheap cost of living when compared to Silicon Valley. Both Ireland and Northern Ireland have gotten a lot of tech investment in recent years for these reasons, especially when it comes to software development.

I know, but good people live there. And it creates jobs. So I am all for it.

You should watch the Delorean docu. I think it is on Netflix? I really can't remember. People who were absolutely pee poor got jobs there and he treated them well, and their lives changed for the better.

I have been to Ireland, to the South, back in the early 90s and no one there had anything. These sorts of things are amazing for their community. Tax haven or not.

Oh don't get me wrong it's great for the Republic as my dad and his entire family are Irish but I have a very pessimistic view of companies choosing the Republic due to the tax haven stuff ^_^

I clean for an elderly man that always tells me the news, even when I don't want to hear it. I can imagine he'll be telling me next Thursday that Ireland will be getting new jobs through AMD "so that people don't have to immigrate to New Zealand, Australia, America or Canada. They can stay home." He literally will say it verbatim like that, every time even two new jobs are made available here in Ireland.

lol. I shouldn't laugh, but that is very funny.

I remember when I went over there in 1990 every one called me "forward". Like, they were still in 80s clothes.

Loved it over there. Would take the simple life of that any day tbh.

So many fond memories. Like when my girlfriend's brother said "Let's go to the holiday cottage". "Oh where is that?" I asked. "Oh it's only up the road" he says. Three hours dude. Three hours it took us to walk there :D I thought my city boy legs were going to bloody fall off :D
