AMD or Intel, and which Mainboard!

Hi guys,

So I'm pretty new to the forums and am looking for some advice on upgrading my current rig. Currently I have a pretty old setup which I'm not going to mention because you'll laugh yourself into a fit. I'm really just looking for a decent CPU and motherboard to deal with day-to-day gaming. I read that the CPU isn't the most important thing when it comes to gaming but that the GPU is more important. I have been looking at the AMD Phenom II 555 3.2ghz CPU because.. well.. I've been using AMD for about 6 years now. What are your thoughts on a good CPU/Motherboard combination?

Well Intel are faster but when it comes to gaming i dont think there is a huge difference to justify the price they charge. I got a 1090T for my gaming and its awesome much better than the dual core i had so my advice to you is get a quad core at least not a dual core as you'll prob have to change that again soon if you get a dual core. The best am3 motherboard without spending huge amount i think personally is the Asus Crosshair Formula 4 i own it and its great for OCing and looks awesome.

Also need more info how much are you looking to spend?

Thanks for the info. I'm looking to figure out what would be the a decent rig to setup and then from there buying stuff one at a time if necessary since I have a pc to use while I buy all the parts for the new one. I'd like to be able to play most FPS games online with high to maximum graphics (I also play EVE-Online with full graphics but that's not much of a wow). I hope that helps.

Edit* I'm also looking to run only 1 GPU (possibly later upgrading to 2, but 2 will definitely be the maximum).

I have got the i5 2500K and Asus P8P67 Pro combo and really love it...

Never tried any AMD stuff...

AMD are good bang for buck, but then the i5-2500K + A good gaming Mobo (i.e. Sabertooth) is going to cost about £300 for both, which is pretty impressive stuff. Outperforms the 1090T, and overclocks like a charm.

yes it out performs the 1090T but how many FPS increase do you see just changing the CPU. Not woth even £50 if you ask me but thats my opinion plus amd cpu's are cheaper and so are the MB. Money you'll save going AMD will be better put to use being put towards a GPU and give you much more FPS.

i5-2500K - c. £145

AMD 1090T - c. £125

That's nothing like £50 difference.

Do agree that the GPU is far more likely to be the limiting factor, especially at anywhere near a HD res.

well Where to start.

It really depends on the games you are playing, if (like me) you are really sad and love FSX then the GPU (although important) isn't any where near as stressed as the CPU. On The other hand when you play games like Metro 2033 the GPU is hammered.

I love AMD and the CPU you picked is a real cracker. If you are going to be Overclocking the CPU, The The 555 is a good choice as it will have an unlocked multiplier (being a black Edition).

I will just put this out there though, I managed to get 3.7Ghz out of an Athlon II x4 640. Now I know that you only have two levels of cache with an Athlon Chip but you would have four cores to a pose of two.

If you want a real monster mobo then the Asus crosshair is the best money can buy for AMD chips. However the Astock A790GXH/128m aint a bad little mobo either. Its nice and cheap and will support AMD's Hex core cpu's. It is only DDR2 though.

Not a problem just something to bare in mind as DDR2 is getting bloody expensive.
