AMD may not have shown its strongest RDNA 2/Big Navi GPU at their Ryzen event

What if AMD were only showing the 5500 replacement (6500) and we have a 6600 and a 6700 waiting in the wings?.
Unlikely although possible.

I think this is the main issue. People want something from AMD in order for them to buy Nvidia at a better price.

What we need is people switching to AMD outright so that Nvidia have to "drastically" lower their prices to win people back. Not drop it a little as an incentive to stay with them. Easier said than done of course since I think the same way as you. Its hard to move from the green team when their cards dominate so much. At least until now.

Totally agree. People have been saying for years, "I want AMD to be competitive so I can buy a cheaper Nvidia card." This is delusional.

But I've changed my tune since then. I don't think AMD will undercut Nvidia even if they could. They know that people will still choose Nvidia out of habit. Why lose profits because of that? I think they're accepting their place and doing what they can to cater to the market they know they could potentially earn a profit from. Same goes for the pricing of Zen 3, but for slightly different reasons. Why would AMD charge what they charged for Zen 2 when they know they can sell virtually as many units and increase profits?

I want to see a 3080Ti because it proves AMD have Nvidia by the ropes. That's exciting to me. It's not so I can buy 3090-performance from Nvidia at £800. I won't be buying AMD's flagship. I have no need for 3080-like performance. I don't have the income any more to splash on these products. I'm hoping I can build an SFF system in 2021, but I'll be sticking to a 6 core CPU (unless AMD releases a cheaper 8-core Zen 3 part) and AMD's midrange GPU, maybe their 6700, or even 6600XT.

Didn't AMD specifically say 'Big Navi' in their Zen 3 presentation? I can't remember for sure or not.

Yup. Lisa said that they had taken then name from their fans on Twitter etc.

However, "Big Navi" is the whole range, not just one big card.

I'm still torn, but I genuinely do believe (shoot me) that they are holding back something. Maybe that's just the hope in me. That said even at 3080 levels that's very impressive for a company with a tiny amount of the R&D cash Nvidia have.

^ This. This is exactly what I don't see with people no more.

It's always Nvidia etc, which is completely fine. But if you look at the sizes of the companies, the raw financial resources they have at their disposal.

What AMD has done these last few years and even if they don't compete with Nvidia to 100%, it's still hella impressive.

One of the main reasons I switched to Ryzen over Intel - I want to support the underdog.

Ahh, yes, that makes sense.

I also think they're holding performance back. As you said already, by doing basic mathematics you can see that the 'Biggest' Big Navi should offer at least 3080 performance consistently, and beating it handily in optimised titles, thus nipping at the heals of the 3090.

Yeah, totally agree.

I feel happy to say, you have not supported the underdog in this case. AMD are no longer the ones behind if you think CPU market. They may be the smaller company, but they are not small per se. And far from being an underdog now.

It is simply great to see Intel sweating and struggling. They still seem to hold on to the loyal fans which is fine, (loyal fans are not fan boys before anyone comments) but I would have liked to see their prices fall. Sadly they havent and we have just watched AMD bump theirs up to match, now that they know they have a aggressively competing product.

My worry now, is that they deploy the same strategy for Big Navi. Putting it in the region of the 3080 pricing which while a good card, is still too high.

They will. No doubt in my mind at all.

The 5700 and XT were made to compete with the 2060 and 2070. 5700XT was $449, 5700 was $379.

By that time 2070s were a bit cheaper. Say around $500. The 2060 was then around $350.

Nvidia then launched the Supers, at $499 for the 2070s and $399 for the 2060s.

But yeah, if you toll up for all of the missing features of Navi then tbh? that was about the maximum price AMD could get.

I reckon "up to" £50 cheaper per sku across the board tbh. At which point Nvidia don't really have to do anything, because they always charge more any way.
