AMD are planning on releasing a new socket in Q2 of 2006.

The planned socket will run on a DDR II platform, with a whopping DDR667. Multi's up to 10x here's the chart for you perusal:

fair enough, so its actually going to be a physically bigger cpu sitting on the motherboard

it might not be, cpu's have gotten smaller so far with the pin increase

I actually HOPE the processor is bigger... Because more pimps on a smaller cpu = way easier to fuck up on accident.

Also, it's too bad that the M2 cpu's won't be 65nm :(

 What what what??? What about the future of the Athlon XP line???

:( :cussing: :cussing: :cussing: WWWAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!! :(

But seriously....whenever I upgrade again (in a year or two).....they'll be some serious technology to play with....

LOL K7 cpu's where discountinued from the production line a few months ago

the old bartons were good CPU's it wil be a shame to see them go :(...but this new socket...PHWOR...so much power...all they need do is make the pins the size as on socket 462...then i can bend em back, if i acidently bend em...

Yup, the Bartons were a good chip....no, I knew the 3200 was the end of the line a while back....64 is the way to go at the moment....

Oh well....something to dream about in the future.

i think, after the sucess of socket A that they cant really abandon it...cant they bring out a 32 bit 4000+ for socket A as a final atempt to revive it?

There are so many things i could say about this post but i won't.

Actually:

* Because current socket A motherboards wouldnt support a 4000+ chip, so motherboard manufacturers would need to make new bios's or release new boards (which they wouldnt be arsed to do for a dead technology).

* Because the yeild rates of making Socket A XP processors would probably be crap.

* Because AMD want people to use their latest processors.

* Because the production line for XP chips has stopped. And to reopen it would be just stupid and costly.

Want me to carry on....
