AMD launch Ramdisk software

not tried the amd one but I have used the dataram one (amd paid dataram to brand it for amd)

I recently wrote an article about using it for temporary storage:

Didn't this exist quite a long time ?
A friend of mine asked me for a ram disk programm about half a year ago and i think i recommended that. But not quite sure though.

I think you are right, the amd branded one has been out for a while (think it was released 2012)

Tried it a while ago but for some reason I couldn't get it to work.
I use the Dataram one for a 500mb browser cache ATM, don't really have a use for using a ramdisk for anything else.

Can someone please explain exactly what this is? i.e does it serve the same function as an SSD or what?

It's basically a way of speeding up read and write speeds.
I don't know all the technical details, but you can use a ram disk to store data or use it as cache.

When you access something on your HDD/SSD it gets read, cached then written. But with a RAM disk (depending what you put on it) the data it's already cached. so that time it takes for the data to be read, cached and written is reduced.

There are other situations for ram disks, i'm not an expert on them, but thats my general gist on them.

Thanks dude :) that's all i needed, a general gist. So i guess AMD's argument is that by using these in conjunction with your HDD or SSD your games will load even faster

Will this conflict with an already installed SSD? What I mean is my SSD is my primary drive for OS and boot programs, but all my games are on a 500gb HDD with a 4gb cache (so not needed there). And I have a 1tb that I would like to use this on.

I think this is what AMD were thinking but I don't see much point in using ramdisks for games or anything that is not temporary as there is too much risk of data loss.
I know you can set the disk to save/load on startup/shutdown but if u crash that's sort of it :( (or at the least you lose the changes since the last sync)

I use ramdisks in linux for various things (all temporary storage), have done for years.
I am really surprised microsoft haven't implemented anything with ramdisks really.

I think the first article I wrote about using ramdisks for desktop operations was in 2010 :o

The only thing I've used a ramdisk for in windows so far is browser cache.

The fact this is charged in Tiers... is total BS.

You can use plenty of free tools for this. People are just getting on the bandwagon now more of us have more ram, the issue is, most games (MOST) are above 10GB these days, so unless you're in the 16~32gb range you're actually pretty limited. And believe me when I say it doesn't always play nice, there is plenty of room for things to go all corrupt on you're ass.

I ran AVP (the new one) straight from a ramdisk and it did run exceedingly quickly, but realisticaly, when will you ever need that?

I have been looking for a x64 ramdisk app that can assign more than 8gb for free. Do you have any links ?

You might want to have a read of this too:

Several of us have been using ImDisk as our RD software and running games off RAM. It doesn't have a persistent cache function but there's a very easy method we use - install onto an HDD (any old slow one will do). Then to run a program/game just copy the installation folder across and make a junction to point at the .exe. You can also set up scripts to automate the process as Scoob did.

At the time when Scoob started that thread RAM was cheap and decent sized SSDs (240GB+) were expensive so it actually made good economic sense to play around with it but I'm not so sure these days. I still love using RDs for my gaming but SSDs do the job perfectly well and I still end up waiting for everyone else in a multiplayer environment anyway...though it makes any single player games as smooth as they will ever be.
