i have never done any overclocking an want to give it a go, does anyone have any advice or tips they could give me

thanks :)

Well for starters make sure you got some proper cooling, and a proper PSU. If so, then you could start increasing the multiplier bit by bit and test. Go for 4GHZ, and test. Make sure to come back with results. Also it would be good if you'd post your rig specs too so we know what we're dealing with :)

It should be down in my signature bay now its not my finished rig (first build an all gpu's are just a make do for now till the new radeon 8000 series)

Is this your first time overclocking? if yes, make sure you follow my instructions above... (Go for 4GHz on stock volts using the multiplier and stress test then come back with the results ...stable/unstable... and we'll take it from there.^_^

yeah its my first time overclocking its my first pc build, i have tryed the OC genie 2 app that my mobo comes with but it didn't work well kept getting fails in prime 95

No no no! First rule of overclocking! USE THE BIOS! Go to the BIOS and raise the multiplier to 40 (20x200FSB=4000MHZ). Never use OC utilities for CPU overclock!

Agreed. Stick to the BIOS and stick with stock voltage and see how far you can push it by ticking up the multiplier only. Download and install OCCT too as its the best stress tester IMO because it has all the monitoring utilities right there with it. One stop shopping. ;)

Once you set a speed, try to run 10 minutes of OCCT. If it passes and your temps don't exceed 61C them bump the core speed up another notch and repeat. When you crash, up the voltage a tick. When you hit the point where you can't stay under 61C temps then you've hit your wall.

Once you think you've got it, you'll want to run OCCT for a couple hours at least to make sure it is stable for 24/7 use.

Once you get your best OC, then we'll then your attention to the CPU/NB amr HT Link speed as they can give a decent boost in performance too.

yeah i gathered that as it failed straight away so i turned it off an never touched it again haha XD

cool i don't think i am gonna try this tonight as i am going to bed shortly but i will defiantly be doing this tomorrow afternoon, thanks for the advice guys i will post up news on my success/epic fail tomorrow haha. oh i will throw some pic of my rig up tomorrow too an my ideas of where i wanna go with it

thanks again guys :)

at stock voltage @Resonance

an how should i increase the voltage scale wise in your opinion?

Small increments, add 0.05V and test. if it proves to be unstable add another 0.05 And your voltage is set on auto? When you stress tested it, what happend to the voltage? did it drop? what is your Idle voltage? Have you disable all your power saving features? if not yet, do it.
Seems strange to me that it' not stable on stock volts. Maybe you should set the stock voltage manually an try again before increasing.

yeah its on auto an yeah i think i disabled all the power saving functions of the cpu, i alson disabled the turbo boost too. when at 4ghz idle the voltage was 1.264 an when prime 95 starts running it go's to 1.248

It has a Vdrop there, try setting it to 1.28V and prime again, see how things go, and monitor the voltage and the temps and come back with the results.

ahh i see ok bud gonna give it another pop in a bit, i have just put some pics of my rig up by the way if you wanna check it out
