AMD is expected to launch dual core Opteron processors on the 21st of this month. Also expected are consumer level chips arriving sometime in June. AMD will likely sell some of the dual core chips for the same prices as the single core versions to encourage adoption. The first expected dual core chips will likely be the 800 series, with dual core 200 series chips showing up in May. Expected pricing ranges from $851 (USD) for the 265 to $1,299 for the 275 and from $1,514 for the 865 to $2,649 for the 875.

;) :D

Very nice, too bad that's a wee bit over the Fragsters budget :) I'll be adopting dual core NEXT year... Single core will have to do through the end of this year, lol.

I could check out the $850 one... that's not tooooooo bad but still god damn expensive. I guess you have to figure that they're pretty much using twice the components found on a single core chip so the prices are bound to be much higher.

I'll be waiting until next year to get a dual core. And only then if I can afford it ok.

If not then hopefully the FX-55 will have gone down in price or there will be a super fast single core chip that I can afford! ;)

AFAIK at the mo, only M$ Advanced Server will work with dual cores & how 'kin expensive is that. Have to see what other O/S's adopt the technology.

Anyhoo, looks like Intel are attempting to pip them to the post

Days after AMD confirmed its dual-core desktop chips would be

here early, Intel has promised that desktops featuring dual-core

Pentium 4 chips will ship 'immintently'

This is way off topic but I was just looking through the refurbed mobo bin at newegg and they have a super nice Leadtek WinFast NF3 s940 mobo for like $50 that looks like it'd be a badass platform for a 2.6ghz Troy Opty :D
