AMD claims the gaming crown with its Ryzen 5000 series of processors

I'm sold on these 5000 series, I need the IPC. My 3900X has done well but it's single thread performance is holding me back for VR. I'm still undecided on which of the 59s to go for, the 5900X looks to be cracking value for compute verses the undeniable halo feelgood factor of the 5950X. Eeny meeny miny mo :)
The Big Navi peak was also pretty cool, if it comes in at 3080 FE pricing (msrp), I can use that to justify going for the 5950x as I was / am willing to pay upto 1k for a top line card that isn't Nvidia. I'm really really interested in how it'll go under Linux & ROCm.

Explainer for above, I do a bit of simming (IL2 Sturmovik Great Battles mainly) and I'm getting a HP Reverb G2 which works under Steam VR, IL2 likes single thread perf, VR likes single thread perf but I also use my rig for VM's and coding so it's got be a good jack of all trades. I'm one of those few people that prefer the AMD graphics drivers over the Nvidia ones for raster image quality and general ease of use and the AMD have caused me far less hassle than Nvidia drivers in a Wintel environment over the last 2 years - stupid stuff like running 3 screens on an Intel / Nvidia machine can be a complete pita whereas a Radeon / Ryzen setup just works. Another strip down and rebuild coming up :) Project Tuxedo got a new motherboard (Crosshair VIII) a while back so I need to shift some cards about to allow me use the Type 3 USB header, I'll hold off till the new Ryzen arrives circa 7th Nov.

Steve @ GN was allowed to directly ask AMD questions regarding the launch. He specifically asked about lower tier CPUs and from the sound of it they gave him the cold shoulder.
Makes sense for them to discourage people from waiting for the actual sensible component and make 5600X look like a bad deal so customers pony up cash for more cores than they'd necessarily need.

Then adjust pricing accordingly and release more models once stores of 3000 series deplete and maybe even next generation Intel CPUs arrive.

What amuses me is that they seemingly released a more power efficient 8700k for 100 euros less. :D But for the more higher end, they remind me of older LGA2011 CPUs with less of a price premium. No compromises, be it gaming or creative work - which I do appreciate.

I'll be sticking with my 3700X this time round. The IPC gain and price hike would not justify me spending £450 on a 5800X for 1440p gaming and VR. I can see a lot of people buying the 3000 series though at a cheaper price. Roll on 13th and 14th "Amazon Prime Days" to see if any bargains come up.

Soo, I don't know if they intend to keep the 3000 series around at the lower end now or what. But £300 for a 6/12 CPU is too much. I don't care how good it is because most of the time it's only 5% or so faster than the 10600k. They can compare it to the 10900k to make it look cheaper all they like but we all know that highly clocked 6 core CPUs are where it is at. That is why they kept losing to Intel on gaming.

Right now the 3600 is £189 on Amazon. The 3600x is £199. So that's a £100 price increase. Yeah, right. To f**k get.

I can understand the £50 on the top tier CPUs. I can. However, £100 on the lowest denominator? haha yeah up ya bum.

They are now at the point where they are competing with themselves, and are winning/losing very well.

I actually think that could be the case. Given AMD dont require you to keep buying a new board, they can keep producing the 3000 or perhaps exhaust stock etc at a lower cost and call them the entry CPU. If they keep the 3000s in production it extends their product catalogue nicely as opposed to making previous gen EOL.

Lets face it, the 3800,3900 etc are still damn good processors. You could keep them running without doing silly refreshes like they used to.

I might switch to the 5000. I like to think I have saved alot over time sticking with my 7700k.
