Is it the exact same process as the Intel chips?? Is there anything I should take into consideration other then the guidelines in the Intel lapping thread?

Oh noes! How will I prevent dust from going on the underside of the processor? shall I buy a faulty 939 motherboard, plug it into that and do it that way?

could also remove the IHS completly, from what i heard it can make quite a big difference.

I've lapped two of my 939 AMD's so far and both times I have put a piece of the foamy styrofoam stuff that comes in the little plastic cpu carrier on the pins then gone after it with the sandpaper. No problems either time. The dust really isn't that big of an issue tbh, just give it a good blow before you stick it in the socket.

I've also lapped with water and it will definately give you a shinier end result if done properly. Water can't hurt a CPU as long as you make sure it's COMPLETELY dry before powering it up.

stop being a whimp and pop its cherry. Its easier and faster than lapping and you get better gains. Just make sure u have a screw down hsf.

I just changed my motherboard and 'forgot' to lap it . the hsf is a nightmare to remove & install. I'll probably do it next week when I get time

A BT is not a nightmare to remove and install! I've done it a few times (in case )

I have mine screwed down, but I have nuts securing it too... so its a process of unbolting the nuts, then unscrewing... in order to remove the hsf in the case, I need to remove my psu :freak:.. in order to remove my psu, I need to remove the hsf :freak:... the alternative *simple* solution is to remove the motherboard completely. :freak:

I can't wait though! I specially' borrowed some extra cpu trays from work to work on it. Need some emery(sp?) cloth though!

the best way to get a BT to sit on a motherboard is to remove the nuts in the backplate and put some 6-3 screws through it and put two wingnuts on top. Its the easiest and the sturdiest installation method. All the equipment can be found at ur local hardware store. You can even put some springs under the wingnuts to even out the force ( i didnt but then again i didnt see the need to ) . And lap your BT if you havent. You will be surprised how big of a difference it makes in your temps.

Just an update... I lapped my processor & heatsink this weekend.

room temp: around 30/31

before temp(idle): 44ish

before temp(load): 51ish

after temp(idle):39ish

after temp(load):47ish

bear in mind I'm in a tiny box room atm with zilcho ventilation and the load temps were checked during a game of css (zombie server, 40players)

It took me around 1hr30mins to complete... the process of removing the top layer was pretty difficult as I only had the CPU tray/foam to get a firm grip.. I also found that water really does help

Towards the end I used the compressor to tidy up and forgot it was so powerful! The processor flew out of my hand and onto the grass!! (First time round). There were a few bent pins, 1 of them was around 45° off. I was crapping myself after I straightened them.

To me, water is essential in the process. Some people don't use it, but I suggest it as it speeds up the process and leaves a better finished product. I don't recommend the use of water on P4's however, since they have that strange little breather hole. You could still use water with it, but you'd have to be CERTAIN that any water that got through that hole has dried before flipping the switch.

Yep, it's a good idea to fill that hole before performing any wet sanding on the p4's. It doesn't serve any purpose - its just part of the Intel IHS manufacturing process.

glad it worked out for you. Now pop its cherry since u have already voided the warranty neways. You wont crush the core , unless you are a complete retard which i doubt you are. takes 2 mins to do it and works much better than lapping .
