AMD 939 Lapping

Sorry to bring up a dead thread...

Whats this lapping? Lapping water over the pins or something?

Oh and If I take the IHS (I think thtas what its called) off and cover it in thermale geese will it live? :p

Thanks guys and sorry!

lapping is when you use sandpaper of increasing grit levels (up to as high as possible) to give your IHS a flat and mirror like finish. and no it wont live, you can pop an IHS easily enough but you have to be extra careful with the chip from then on

oh yeah you can kiss your warranty good bye doing this :p

this is helpful if you have a c2d with a concave IHS :wavey: you can see a big drop is temps after lapping ;)

Why is it concaved ?

I mean what`s the design idea of it ?

Please don`t say so u have to use a designed HSF from stock, from m$, I mean Intel.

its just the way they are, dunno why (there might be a reason). generally anything other than 100% flat is seen as a defect and should be sanded out on a really flat surface (usually glass) to give a slight performance bump. also the mirror finish means less tiny air pockets on the surface = better conductivity and the sanding removes anything that the copper is coated in

if your IHS already has a "shiny" but not to shiny :P surface, then could u jump right upto 2000 grit paper ?

Not recomended. Just cos its shiney dosn't mean its not bent...
