AMD's new AM2+ and K8L architecture are supposedly due out in the Q3 2007, but will it be enough to pull them out of a very dire situation? Feel free to comment below...

I read somewhere last night that AMD claims Barcelona quadcore will be about 40% faster than Cloverton (Core architecture) which is a dual-die setup opposed to a native quad like the Barcelona. AMD is also integrating the memory controller on to the die, as usual which as we have seen in the past is usually faster than Intel's off-die memory controller.

every1 now is beasting that Intel is owning AMD.

but for the past few YEARS, AMD's Athlon 64 was better than the P4 in gaming apps, and their X2 Line owned the PD..

We were there mate :)

I had 6 A64's

I had like 15 of those bastids. I had like 5 or 6 3000+'s, a couple 3200+'s, 4 4000+'s, and then I had 3 Opty 180's. Man those were the days of big cash spendin!

Once I get this new PSU, vid card, and physx card installed I seriously don't plan on making any more upgrades for at least a year... I've sunk for more money than originally planned in to this build but I wanted to make sure that I had a DX10 card and PhysX when it goes big, which I have a feeling it will do.

Only other upgrades I might consider making are sound card and Vista.

This and R600 both put me off upgrading my system so much, I have always been a bit of a fan boy of AMD but was thinking of going to Intel just because they are so ahead of the game.

Might wait now...

at least a year..

i dread those words, no offense, just like, upgrading and spending so much so often nobody likes, if only the hardware ppl just took a break for a year, or just worked on an INTENSE Chip, AMD/Intel together, omg

At the rate were going right now I predict desktop computers to be running on a quantum computing architecture by say 2020, does that sound feasible?

z0mg @ desktop quantum computing.

I think the demise of AMD is premature. To be honest I didnt notice any difference from my Opty148 (single core at 2.9Ghz) and my C2D 6300(dual core at 3.1Ghz)

What I did notice is a few new mobos (Intel Chipsets) that were a pain to use.

Ive gone back to AMD.:intelwar:

Really? Wow. I noticed a considerable difference, especially when benchmarking. But if you're not in to the whole benchmarking scene and raw performance measuring then AMD probably is the best choice. 939 / AM2 is a pretty no-hassle platform, I absolutely love it.

Sometimes I forget that the name of the forum is OC3D:D Kind of "taking it to the edge" like your case.

Mabye when DX10 games show up and games really need 2, 4 or 8 cores it will be different.

I do have to admit 1 thing, Intel did a very good job of making the price of the C2D close.

For me my DFI Expert, GeilONE,Opty148 and 7600GTs were easily hitting over 11K in 3DMark05 and my Abit AB9Pro,Corsair XMS2 and 7900GS wouldnt get much over 9K no matter what I did.

When I first got the pc bug, I was a fan of AMD because they didn't use 'brute force' to make their cpu's. It was 'think outside the box', and what Intel could do with 3GHz, AMD could do with 2GHz.

Now Intel has regrouped and AMD has taken one b!t(# slap after another. I hope they can pull it out and get neck-and-neck competitive again... for the simple economics of the situation. I'm a capitalist and don't believe true monopolies exist, but it wouldn't be good for us consumers if AMD went down the poopchute.

As for this 'AM2+' and 'K8L', gotta show me something before I can make a call. I saw an article in Maximum PC about the 2-cpu 'QuadFX', and was a bit deflated when I saw that a single-cpu QX6700 beat it down like Ivan Drago did to Rocky. (You all know Rocky should've been so much tomato paste...)

benchmarking is one thing, then real world performance, with apps and games is completely different

i look more at the perf in apps/games

i couldnt care lesss really about 3dmark06 and such
