Le mans seems to have huge crashes, there was another one that race, Mike Rockenfeller I think his name is, and I dont know if you saw in 1999 I think, one of the mercedes doing triple somersaults! And yeah, hard to believe they can make them this safe, although if you saw the Monaco race and Petrovs wee dink, he had to go to hospital...

I remember that one with the triple somersault there have been a few like it since as well.
