needed to do some testing so pop down the local computer fair today

and bought one of these

Thermaltake Sonic Tower

http://www.cluboc.net/reviews/heatsinks/thermaltake/sonic_tower/index.htm

as it was the largest one i could see

after getting it home and having a good look was a lil bit disapointed in the general build quality the surface of the sink looked like it had been ploughed

but as i had it

i fitted it any ho, before i changed the sink for the stock intel

i checked the temps 49c idle

after fitting the sonic with AS5 and booting up i was very surprised to see temps had droped to 36c idle

been running some super pi today @ 3.7 (qx6700) and i could not be happier with this cooler

lol :p

It looks like a beast! Perhaps give it a good lapping, and you never know, you may see even better temps/ overclock :)

36C load temp drop? What were your load temps before?

If the surface was really that bad then a lapping may help your temps quite a bit (may be lapping your CPU's IHS depending on how flat it is).
