Advice on getting GTX 460 to work with DVI-VGA converter

I just built a new pc, but all I have is an old 15" HP lcd monitor to connect to my GTX 460 Hawx. It worked just fine the first time I started it up, but since then it has required between 2 and 10 or so restarts/ power downs and ons to get it to work. I installed and updated the mobo and videocard drivers (Mobo is a Biostar Sli P55) and I have Windows 7 installed. This last time I tried to get the videocard to recognize the monitor, I have been at it for over a day on and off, trying every weird thing out to see if it would help, unplugging and plugging in the connections turning on and off the monitor turning on and off the pc resetting, trying to blindly get into safe mode etc etc. Nothing is helping. The connection is a dvi to vga converter plugged into the monitor's vga cord. Please advise me.

Sounds similar to trouble I had setting up a TV as a monitor, it was a 260 as opposed to a 460 but i had to plug in a different monitor dvi to dvi and change settings to the lowest resolution possible within windows, then plug the tv back in to the same port, boot and screen worked. Is it possible for you to try that?
