A Pictorial History of GPUs

before i bought the 5770 i was very very close to buying asus 4850 matrix
i love the look of that cooler, reminds me of the ss enterprise!

Lovely tread this is.
Here is my GPU history

So the first GPU was a XFX Radeon HD 5770, it was a huge upgrade to my OEM PC from HP and I loved it. Also I had to buy a better powersupply for the graphics and I bought a Corsair 550w psu.

Later on I decided to sell that HD5770 computer and years went by without a real dekstop gaming computer.

In 2012 I bought my new computer, I bought a PowerColor Radeon HD7870 GHz edition card with that build.

Just a couple of weeks later I saw the XFX Radeon HD 7950 on sale for the same price I bought the 7870 for and I replaced the 7870 by right of withdrawal (45 days open trade, if your not satisfied you get your cash back).
So that was a nice upgrade.

I had that for until january 12th 2013 and sold it to a friend so I could buy my self a Nvidia Gainward Phantom GTX 680 because I was starting to play some FarCry 3 and Crysis 3, I just wanted all that nice eye candy, and It was the most powerful single gpu on the marked at that time.

Then I bought a TITAN and sold the 680 and here I am.

Wow I can't believe the 5770 was so popular tbh.

It's looking like the most popular GPU in this thread ATM (though I admit I've not added them up).

I'm really supriced of how many old GPUs there is in this thread. Its cool to see how the GPU technology has developed through the years, especially the heatsink design. fascinating idd.

Here... Laugh all you like.

Palit 8400GS 1GB DDR3.
I didn't have that much money ok.

XFX Black edition HD5870 (Current card)
I still don't have that much money.

My first Video Card within my first ever desktop pc:

Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT 512MB
Nvidia_GeForce_8500_GT_512MB.jpeg

After that card crashed i replaced it with a Sapphire Radeon HD 5550 1GB Graphics Card:
5550_ddr3_2.jpg

In december 2010 i got a Sapphire Radeon HD 6870

Mid 2012 i added a second one to build up a crossfire system.

And now i got a Gainward Nvidia GTX 660ti Phantom Graphics Card.

I live in the states and from the first time i layed eyes on a gainward cooler i was massivley jealous of how they look very minimalistic but sexy as hell.

My one and only graphics card that i purchased was an EVGA 9800gt and it got me through just about everything in the last couple years . I only got that so i could play Diablo 3 i was waiting till i modified my case before stepping it up, Sadly my first two computers were dells which i dont even thing had a graphics card but all i needed it to play was diablo 2 so it didnt take much lol.

I'm about to date myself

Who remembers Cirrus Logic? My first PC used an 386sx with the i387 and a Cirrus Logic ISA 512KB. Then the lazer 486 with another Cirrus Logic with a full 1MB.
Then came the K6-2 days,
S3 Trio64 2MB and S3 Virge 2MB with a super-glued heatsink. Then the real power, my Voodoo3 3000 AGP 16MB bought so I could play Black & White.
The Voodoo3 lasted up to my Athlon 1400 and XP1700. By this point 3DFX had been bought by Nvidia and driver support was getting hard if not for third party support, so I got a True ATi RadeonVE 32MB (aka 7000) which allowed me to play Neverwinter Nights. The was replaced by an Apollo GeforceFX 5200 128MB which smoked on Sept 11, 2003 (the irony was not missed) and was replaced by a gainwood GeforceFX 5200 half-height (still running today in one of the Yarmouth SPCA office systems.) Due to warranties being an issue the gainwood was a bit of an insult and I changed stores and got me a Sapphire Radeon 9600Pro 256MB from a rival store that I kept to till it closed. After that was my Gigabyte GeforceFX 5500 256MB (running in a friends pc) up till I upgraded to my first Athlon64 939 system that used that cool ULi apg/pci-e chipset.
Then on the Athlon64 3500 came my Asus Geforce 7600GS 512MB Block of aluminium. Heavy card.
Round then I got the next 939 system, an Athlonx2 3800 on the Asus A8N-SLi Premium. Then came the Sapphire Radeon HD2600XT 256MB GDD4.
Round this time my choice store had gone under and I started going to another, and switched to Intel based Core2 4600 on a Asus P5K. The 2600 got kinna load so I got a Sapphire Radeon HD4850 512MB (still have but non-functional due to needing a new cooler) then a second HD4850 only with the dual slot cooler.
Update board to P5Q-E (now my storage server) I kept the 4850 for until the HD5770 1GB came out. That also came with a change in cpu to a Q9450, then a Q9650.
During the era of the Q9x50s I kept the HD5770. (with a brief span of BFG Geforce 9600GT OC for PhyX)
Before the turn of this year I moved from Canada to the US and I had to replace some parts due to damage by UPS, and that leads to my current rig with the PNY Geforce 550Ti.

As spare parts came in, I've also had:
Sapphire 9700Pro (sold to a friend)
Sapphire 9800Pro
another Sapphire 9600Pro
Sapphire 9600XT AIW (in a box here)
Sapphire x700 (in Father-in-law's pc)
Voodoo Banshee
Voodoo1
Voodoo2
another Voodoo3
Voodoo4
Voodoo5
Refence GeforceFX5600 (dead)
Asus GeforceFX 5700 (in Wife's XP for old game system)
Sapphire X1900XT (sold with that Ax2 3800 before the move *sob* I miss that system)
Asus GeforceFX 5200 with TV tuner (I forget the model)
and lots of S3 cards over the years.

I remember buying this in Belgium and the guy telling me it was one of those weird new-fangled things and he didn't understand why I would want one. I shortly remember seeing tomb raider on a 3DFX and kicking myself!

Can't remember why I bought this, it was definitely for something I was playing at the time - could have been OpenGL Quake or quake II.

I think I got this to play Unreal..

I think this buy was because I was fed up of frame outs in raids in WoW went hand in hand with a new mobo and CPU..

Cheers for the cool thread!

A REALLY good thread and boy does it bring back memories :D
Alas at the moment in my main two rigs I am running an EVGA 560 Ti 448 core and an Asus 6950 Direct CU 11, but that's life. :p

Back in the days of Windows 95 and Pentium MMX, this was a pretty sweet card:

1280px-ET6000.JPG

Tseng Labs ET6000. Ran on PCI instead of ISA. Used MDRAM. Was a killer 2D card that could also handle games. I remember playing EF2000, Flight Simulator 98 and Need for Speed on this thing without a sweat.

The rig this was in was a baby AT tower case, Gigabyte motherboard, SB16 sound card, 2GB Quantum HDD, dual floppy drives, a HP CD burner, 5GB Travan tape drive, Goldstar 17" CRT with stereo speakers built-in (a rare find at the time), fax modem card and a HP Deskjet 400 printer.

My first was a Cirrus Logic Nitro v64 1MB then I moved onto the 3DFX Voodoo Graphics 4MB, then the Voodoo Banshee in SLI with a whopping 24MB Combined vram. Those were the days.

Well since i'm only 17 atm i havent updated my pc a lot :D

But i started a few years ago when i want to buy my OWN PC part and i went with a ATI MSI 9800GT back then. Damn it was real beast in my eyes and so proud i bought it!

1218703083.jpg

Then 2-3 years ago it got old and saw a sale in a store close to where i live and was able to buy an asus 5870 HD V2 for just 150€ while those were easily around the 300€ i gues back then? But tbh it was a magnificent card imo. It could play BF3 together with an AMD 965 on ULTRA with a max temp 35 degree

HD5870-MATRIX-13.jpg

Than this summer i upgraded my GPU cause he was slowly dying and went for 2 Gigabyte GTX680 windforce x5 SOC in SLI and are currently under water

Gigabyte-GTX-680-SOC-Windforce-5x-4.jpg

I'm happy with the 680's and hope i can keep using them till late 2015/beginning 2016 but we can never predict the future :D

My first card was an ATI Rage 128 Pro that came bundled in my first PC - a Time Machine. Yeah.

ATI_Rage_128_pro_32MB_IMGP8663.jpg

After many years of playing Tomb Raider 3 and Rage: Incoming, I eventually sold the whole POS to my neighbour for peanuts, and early in 2009 I built my first ever system - based on the Legend that was the Athlon X2 7750 Black Edition processor, and an ASRock motherboard with onboard graphics. Which totally kicked the Rages ass. Bearing in mind my PC was primarily used for porn and ICQ.

But after a while, I got into gaming and quickly realised that onboard graphics suck tramp dick. My 3DMarks score was pretty damn bad...

19551_266379563720_7761809_n.jpg

... so I upgraded to a HIS HD5770 in early 2010...

19551_266379578720_5997469_n.jpg

... which improved my 3DMarks score by quite a bit!

19551_266379743720_619215_n.jpg

Then at the end of 2010, I upgraded to a Phenom X4 955 Black Edition processor, and an XFX HD5850 Black Edition...

55308_481140273720_1014021_o.jpg

... and that's where I'm currently at.

My first card was a Matrox Mystique 220

MatroxMystique220-4MB-card.jpg

Then I added a Voodoo 2

voodoo2hisfb.jpg

Then I had Geforce4 ti4200.

About 6 years ago I invested in 2 of these bad boys

XFX Geforce 8800 Ultra's

And now I have this.

evga-gtx-780-acx-12.jpg

As far back as I can remember:
S3 Virge
Matrox Millenium + 3DFX Voodoo
Matrox Millenium + 3DFX Voodoo 2
TNT2 Ultra
Geforce DDR
Geforce 3 Ti 500

--- Went to Xbox and Xbox 360 for a while --

ATi 4650 in HT pc
8800 GTX
Asus 560 Ti
GTX 660 "OEM" (except its not a 660 really, its got a gk104), which I have currently cooled by a H55 using the Kraken G10, bios unlocked and tweeked and big overclocks.
