There are some advantages to getting a graphics card on launch day, they are sometimes better overclockers than the ones which come later and also you avoid the problem of being sent cards other people have returned.

Unfortunately as you have said, you can end up paying through the nose for it and if you want a card purely for gaming it makes more sense to wait for the prices to drop.

12 grand could get 4 way sli quadro 6000s, that could run 3x 4k monitors on maxed settings with graphics enhancers on pretty much any game and still have headroom, madness.
