A computer for Starcraft 2

Get an external dvd drive, but if you're only going to play starcraft 2 then i doubt you need a very high spec rig.

i would do this

i5 2500k £160

Msi P67A-GD53 £103

4GB Mushkin Silverline £35

Corsair TX650W £65

CM 690II advanced £65

DVD-RW £10

Samsung f3 1tb £40

Gelid tranquilo cpu cooler £25

EVGA SC Gtx 560ti £180

Creative Soundblaster audigy £20

Total: £720 (added up @ aria) and i dont think i missed anything out

I think that this is pretty good, although I would bin the soundcard and get the Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H instead.

should i get this motherboard Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3 (which is AM3+ ready)(http://www.scan.co.uk/products/giga...-(x16)-ddr3-2000(oc)-sata-6gb-s-sata-raid-atx )

and a phenom ii x6 1100t ? (would i be able to upgrade to a newer CPU when it is released?)

Yes you will be able to upgrade to a Bulldozer when released, but I'm not sure you'll need to. 1100t is a decent 6core processor, it will last some time

Tbh I'm not sure that Starcraft II uses 6 cores. I think 4 cores is all you need so I'd go for a 955 myself but you could always head over to the starcraft II forums and ask there in the technical section how many cores it uses. Just a though

I'm not trying to be shirty when I say this but do you know for a fact that Starcraft 2's going to use all of the 6 cores the 1100T has?

The only stuff I found showed it using 4.

well the dude is obviously a AMD fan boy, he doesnt care that intel are better so he might as well get the hexacore doesnt cost a lot more and i have seen a 2500k outperform a 1100t so he might as well get the hex for gaming

My Q6600 at stock had no problems running SC2 so I doubt a 4 core AMD would but if you are buying new and want to go AMD then you might as well get a 1100T like others have said.

Personally I would just get a 2500k because SC2 doesn't need 6 cores and neither does any other game, some games being released in the future may be optimized to use 6 cores+ but that doesn't mean they won't run on less it just means the games will take advantage of the six+ cores instead of only using 1-4cores the performance however will come from the GPU so as long as you have a decent CPU it won't really matter.

Yeah it utilises about 4 cores. But, at that mention, it doesn't help to have some low end quad core trying to perform. I'd honestly get the 2500k for intel and the 975 BE or the 1090T for AMD

I must be on the wrong bus then because I can't see the point in buying a 6 core CPU when 2 of those cores are going to go to waste for the things jstocky14 listed.

The £60 pounds saved from going for a 1100T to a 955 BE could be better spent on upgrading a 560TI to a 570 which is more important when it comes to games anyway. The reason I'm suggesting the 955 BE is that I heard that they can be pushed to match the speeds of the other 4 cores that AMD have on offer. As AMDFTW said, a 555 BE would run SC2 just fine and I know this for a fact as I've played the demo many times over on the better half's PC which has a 555 BE and 6850 but from what I've read then SC2 does benefit from a four core CPU http://www.bit-tech....arcraft-2-use/3

As for an AMD motherboard, I wouldn't say you need to get a 990X chipset board (although they are the best atm on the AMD side) but I would suggest a board with a AM3+ socket because then when it comes to upgrading you could get a bulldozer CPU before upgrading the mobo if you wanted, although you would need to upgrade the mobo at some point to get the best out of that CPU. These are the AM3+ socket boards that Aria have just to give you something to go on: https://www.aria.co....D+AM3%2B+Ready/

Like everyone says though, the best gaming CPU is the 2500K is the and Aria do a great bundle package https://www.aria.co....productId=44082

I'd personally price up the case, PSU, storage, memory and graphics card you want and then decide with the money you have left if you want to go for the 955 or the 2500K. 2500K is the best but the 955 BE will kill SC2 anyways. Just make sure you get a good graphics card so you can play it maxed out

Totally agree man

Except I'd get the 975 BE just to splurge for the most epic AMD quad

!

thanks for everyone's help i think i still need to consider what processor to get but everyone's been a great help as far as graphics cards are concerned

Basically man, Intel make the best quad core right now. AMD are definitely more bang for buck though, and will definitely get the job done. I'd honestly get yourself an AMD setup, save some cash. It'll perform fine with SC2.
