990x

hey guys,

after toms nice review of the 990x, i really was going crazy about this cpu and i simply had to get one. let us please not talk about money in this thread. this isnt about cost, its about passion.

actually after the waiting, unboxing and connecting to the mb (rampage III extreme) i put the watercooler on it. while checking the temperatures i recognized, that the core temps are differing a lot. core 0 35°C and core 1 21°C. so i changed the thermalpaste again but its still the same. is it normal?

after trying to get the highest baseclock it ended at 213mhz. so i was already a bit disappointed, since tom managed 220mhz with air cooling.

to make a long story short, i got the system running stable at 4.7ghz with a 188.4x23 verclock and 1.45v. cpu temps is about 55°C and the cores aren't going above 73°C.

my question to tom; what do you think, am i unlucky with the cpu or is the problem sitting in front of the monitor?

a nice sunday evening to everyone!

run prime95

this may give you a better idea

thanks for the advice, but prime95, cpu-z, core temp, cinebench11.5, 3dmark vantage and 11 are my standard tools. thats how i got these figures.

by the way, which torture test do you run on prime? "in-place large fft-s", "blend" or anything else?

Drop the multi and put the BCLK up. aim for 200x20 with 1600 ram. Your volts are a bit high tbh for 24/7.

Remember that every cpu is different, its all down to the silicone lottery and my one was a good one to get 5.2

I actually only run it at 4.6 24/7, it was 4.8 for the benches but not everyday kinda set up.

thanks tom. i sent myone back and i'll get another one in exchange. lets see if the performance improves...

which option of prime95 do you use?

large fft's is correct for checking temps. Maximum heat. 30 minute pass should be fine. It's amazing how much this site has helped me. I drive a truck, when my partner is driving all I do is read what these guys post and say. THanks overclock3D , I feel like I know about as much as 1 drop of Tom's sweat. LOL.

Tom, what are your settings for 4.6 24/7? I ve got the 990x as well and i would like to know what is acceptable for 24/7.

Holy thread revival :)
Every chip is different, and thus giving you precise settings won't help at all. Better to teach a man to fish, then give him the fish.

Josh is 100% right, I do not, will not, never have and never will hand out settings.

Better to teach a man how to build his own house and maintain it thn just give him one.

Then the man can help others learn too.....

Basically the more peopleI teach how to do it right, the less work I have to do in the long run....!
