hey

I am getting a gtx560 ti Hawk twin Frozer III and i want to know if i use my old 9800gtx as a physics card will it help or is it just a waste of time?

Thanks

I tried it with my GTX 570 twin frozr III, not worth it. Just adds heat, noise, and power consumption for very little if any performance increase.

Edit: I also tried it with a 9800 GTX+

I just use PhysX on my primary GPU, its not worth it, from performance or temperature -based viewpoint.

Linus on Youtube did a video about this. He used i think a 9800gt with a gtx580 and he go WAY better FPS with just the 580 running everything including physx.

i remember that vid, it was an eye opener. there is only a handful of games that make use of using a dedicated Physx cards (Batman AA is the only one that springs to mind), so you might be generating heat (and i bigger electric bill) for very little return

Well let's be honest, when you have a 580 running at circa 80/90fps or so average in Mafia II (if you want I might run a benchmark when I play a mission), with the PhysX on high and dedicated to the 580, I doubt you need much more fps.

For a weaker card then perhaps its worth it, but to me its a waste of electricity and comfort, because of the excess heat. And the 9800GT is not the coolest cookie.

Using FRAPS, one of the earlier missions, 120second FPS benchmark, Mafia II

Settings: 1080p, Fullscreen, V-Sync on, Brightness 3, AA on, AF 16x, Shadow High, AO On, Geometry Detail High

Used the same mission, same route twice

With PhysX high:

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg

9896, 120000, 51, 105, 82.467

With PhysX off:

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg

10660, 120000, 66, 105, 88.833

So if the idea of a PhysX card is that I get the extra 6.4fps back, then is it worth the extra heat and power? IMO no. However it would give around a 7% increase in performance

For a weaker card then maybe you could justify the heat/power/cost.
