8800GTS (possibly GTX) Probs with Big Screens

For those of you that have read my rants and raves, you know I had a defective 8800GTS...

Silly me. I got a new one from Newegg.com, and the same things happened again. Doesn't take a genius to realize that this wasn't coincidence, so upon further investigation I found that people were having various problems with different monitors, mostly big screened monitors like Apple's Cinema or other HDTV's (I have a 26" RCA HDTV that I use as a monitor for my PC and watch football on Sunday's) (TV shows suck nowadays, nothing like Knight Rider or The A-Team anymore...). Having hooked up my trusty 2 1/2 year old Samsung 17" (8ms, cost me an arm and my first-born back in the day) everything was hunky-dory. :D

I've seen a BIOS fix that apparently corrects this deficiency, so when I find it (again) I'll see if it works and report back.

Yeah, using a DVI to HDMI cable, and still going without the big screen...:mad:

EVGA has a GPU BIOS update for the Apple Cinema 23" monitor, but didn't help my case out. Guess I gotta work on my 17" Samsung until PC#2 gets put together. Was thinking about getting a 22" monitor anyway, 26 inches is a bit of overkill for a PC monitor...:rolleyes: (Took a few days to get used to playing 'Halo' on a huge screen at 2 feet away, had to lean back.)

Yep, CPU and GPU were at stock levels when trying to hook up to the big screen. I don't have a standard DVI hookup on my HDTV, only HDMI/component/VGA/cable. I'll try out the component later, though I suspect it'll still be a no-go... apparently there's some sort of programing involved that allows the video cards to recognize what TV/monitor it will be displayed through, and I don't think my RCA (TCL Thompson) is one of them. My hope is it will work but without a hit to graphics performance or how good it looks (like the difference between HDTV and analog).

Dude thats not cool. The $700 LG from Wal-Mart i want even has DVI input for high res display from your PC and its 32". THats the first thing i look for.
 
lol, I wasn't worried about a DVI connector so long as it had an HDMI connector.

Remember, my 7900GT's worked just fine with this HDTV, so my thinking is the video card needs a BIOS or driver update to make it usable with my HDTV. I have been able to get past the startup problems, but lately even disconnecting the cable and reconnecting after the OS has loaded doesn't work.

Watching football right now, will check the component setup later:D .

I bought a 6500 card from XFX, passive, with vga/dvi/hdtv for £17 that does the job.

What brand is this G80, (eVGA ya donut) or u reckoning this is widespread ? I`m thinking Kemps work fine ??
 
Well, I tried the video out connector and though it did boot into Windows, it looked like @$$. 1024x768 was the default resolution as well as the highest, so while lower resolutions looked better, they were also huge (not my cup of tea). Couldn't make any adjustments, just awful.

As things go, I hooked my cable box (HD/DVR) to my HDTV with my HDMI cable and it looks much better than with component cables (Y/Pb/Pr). Funny, after running cable TV/internet for 8 months in Sacramento, CA, I never really noticed much difference between the two... until now. HD channels always looked a bit grainy with component, but now it looks just like I saw on all the HDTV's I hooked up before. Of course, could just be the TV...

I went to Best Buy once to look at their HDTV display setup. I really saw no difference at all, except that it looked like one screen had Digital Vibrance and the other didnt.
 
There is quite a difference between standard res TV and HDTV. All of the small details you can actually see rather than being a blur in the background, the colours are far more vibrant and the screen looks much more real.

also try stretching DVD to 1920 x 1200 :p
 
I think I messed up when I said that component made the HDTV look a bit grainy... truth is I never saw much diff between using a DVI or HDMI cable and component when using an HDTV. With my RCA, there is a DEFINITE diff.

There's no denying that HDTV looks much better than standard TV, but I have seen strange things... one standard TV hooked up to an HDTV box looked really good on the HD channels, a definite diff between the analog and digital channels. Like you said, made the picture much brighter, the colors stand out.

As for my prob, you (Kemp) say try setting DVD to 1900x1200... how? I can only adjust to 1024x768 in my GPU settings.

Ah so, wondering if I missed something (again).

Really hope nVidia puts out a patch so I can start using my big screen again and switch my 17" over to PC#2. 'Til then, I'm pooched...
