8800GTS or GTX?

Lo lads

Well I've decided to purchase a new DX10 capable card as the last piece of kit needed for AquAus. Currently I'm running an XFX 7900 GT Extreme, but with only a 17" monitor (which is about to be upgraded to a 22" one come Friday). Graphics quality is important to me, but playing at a resolution capability of the Dell 24" or 30" isn't. Well so my missus tells me anyway. I was looking at a reasonably priced GTS, as I'm sure it would more than handle anything I'd throw at it. But, I'm still not excluding the chance of a GTX purchase either. The card will eventually be under water, but it won't be SLI'd (been there, done that and I don't have the cash available atm to stretch that far). It is highly probable that when R600 comes out, I will upgrade again ( based on concrete perf. figures). All constructive suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks

march is only around the corner, whether u get an ATI card or not the Nvidia prices should drop, by that time hopefully graphics drivers for vista should be better, no DX10 games are out yet. Ur 7900 GT Extreme should still handle anything that comes @ it right now even Episode II of Half-Life2 which should also be coming out in late march. personally id wait, if u want more frame rate than ur 7900 GT then go for it, but if its DX10, no point right now.

If you feel the need NOT to wait I like the GTS. Besides not needing the extra space or the dual power connections it has to be perfect for a 22 or 24" screen.

If they do drop in price another in SLI will beatup the GTX if you feel the need to.

They should be easy to sell as they are the top of the top if you do change ur mind.

That being said you are married, right? In the interest of marital bliss I would spend it on the wife and enjoy the 7900:beerchug:

Agreed, stick with your 7900 not many games are going to go to DX10 fer a while, no point wasting money.

Agreed - slightly.

I seem to think that the larger game manufacturers, hmm maybe better words would be - the game manufacturers u all know`n`love, will already have games in the pipeline that are running on DX10 inhouse. They probably got the ati and nvidia present and coming cards and are seeing what they can do.

Chances are their newer releases will be more than georgous with dx9, but have the ability to notice a dx10 capable card and exploit it ~a bit~. Maybe even issuing patches for existing software.

Can`t see it being too widespread tho, prehaps just those manufacturers with agreements with the card manufs. (the type that show "best played on" when they`re loading maybe)

Aye if your not waiting then go for the GTS, not worth splashing out just before R600

Yeah, if u`r busting to buy one then a GTS will be less of a cash splash. I foresee these card prices dropping an amount as the ati cards hit the shelves, and then prehaps rising again ~a bit~ as 8300, 8600, 8900 - or whatever - start to appear.

EDIT: meant to add, the 7900 is still a mean card.

Thanks for your suggestions lads. But, I found myself an absolute bargain and couldn't resist the splurge. I still have money set aside for R600 (if it's worthy of it) when it eventually arrives.
