8800 and 9600

Hi,

My card was replaced under rma. So I now have a 9600 gt 512 instead of a 8800gts 640.

Are they identical cards? Clocks all that same? Cause I wasnt told that they would do it. I know they can, but I was not told - just that I would get a replacement.

Can I run the two cards in sli? 9600 and a 8800?

The second card is also now RMAd, so maybe the above wnt matter as I could recieve a second 9600 gt.

Firstly there's no way you can do SLI with different cards. Secondly the 9600GT is a lower performance part compared to a 8800GTS. If you go to Tom's Hardware, they have a gpu chart and you can compare the two. I checked it, and the 9600GT was slower in every single test, some things not so much, but a lot of modern games between 30-50% slower (COD4, World in Conflict, Quake ET, Crysis)

The 8800GT (with 112 cores, not 96 and a minimum of 512Mb) is about on par with your old 8800GTS. Towards the end of last year all 8800GT cards were rebranded as 9800GT so if you were offered either that would be fine. But make sure if you go SLI that you have either two 8800GT or two 9800GT.

So it would seem that I got a slightly better card, though have lost the option of going SLI with the cards.

Cheers

There are more than one version of the 8800GTS (2 based on the G80 core, and 1 on the G92). Does yours have 96, 112 or 128 stream processors?
