8 dimms for my build help

Hey guys. Some of you may be aware that im working on my first build. Ive got my R4E and the 3930k is on the way i have yet to order ram and gfx so i have a question. I have heard that maxin your ram slots limits your overclocking potential. Is this true with x79. Because i was thinking of getting 8 sticks of 2133mhz dominator gt then running it underwater will i be able to run the sticks at their rated speed and how do will it affect the overclock of the processor i dont mind losing a few hundred hz. But if its gonna slow me down too much i will have to rethink my layout

Cheers chivers and chivettes

I meant dudes and dudettes. Thats what having the chive open on another window does to ya

dont know if that has been explored yet to tell ya the truth but why do you want/need that much ram?? Hell 4 4gb sticks would be enough for about anything out there. as far as running it under water thats for epeen only as ram dont run that hot to begin with its useless to add it to ur loop. But in the past one was able to get higher stable oc's with just the min amount of ram sometimes that was just 1 stick.

im not doing it for epeen at all. im doing it cos i think it will look sweeter that a swimming pool full of mountain dew. i want to fill the slots because i think with the theme im going with it is needed. the plan was to start with 4 sticks and then get another 4 when i get my gtx780s in the summer because they are £260+shipping per 4 sticks and this week alone i have spent £333 on a R4E and £460 on the 3930k. ive still got to get a temp gfx card, ram, blocks, cables, fittings, tubing, about 150 smd leds+resistors, and a few more things. most of the expensive stuff. so the thing is coming together quicker now and i was just hoping for some advice before i commit. i think if i can maybe get a sponsor it might ease the pressure and i can get the thing knocked out a bit quicker. but cheers mate for responding so quick. maybe someone will see this and know the score then we will all learn something snazzy.

The less sticks the better. I am not sure about speed wise but it will defiantly limit overclock potential for the simple law of "the more things you have, the more things can go wrong." The less ram you have the lower your percentage of failure. Just like OCing a CPU, the more cores it has the harder it "can" be to OC because you have more cores you have a higher chance of one not being able to hit the appropriate clock speed. It has nothing to do with electronics or computing at all, it's just like I said, the more you have the more can go wrong.

Crap. Thats the answer is didnt want but expected. Soi basically it would suck

Not suck, but raise your chances of failure. Who knows maybe you will get lucky and get eight sticks that work perfectly

I don't mean failure as in massive failure but less overclockability because of potential RAM issues.

8 sticks would stress the imc more too, making it much harder to hit the same high mhz that you would with ease with only 2 or 4 sticks.

Say theoretically i can overclock my 3930k to 5ghz on water with 4 sticks but when i throw in an extra 4 dticks at 2133 i can only reach a stable max of 4.7ghz. Is that the kind ao thing your talking about. And buy failure you just mean failure to post at speeds associated with 4 sticks or components going POP

shouldnt make things go pop but can limit ocability. so in a nut shell yes like 5Ghz with 4 but only 4.7GHz with 8 I would imagine thats a good analogy but then again it may not hamper you at all. But as said it will use more bandwidth so you may see increased performance over 4 sticks. if your going to do it post results both ways for us to see how its working for you.

Awesome. Its settled then. I shall get the first set of 4 test then when i get the funds ill fire the second set in. Off to the local builder supplies to score some timber for mah deskcase
