7970 Matrix Platinum vs GTX680 DirectCU II TOP ?

Hi. So, I'm going to get myself a new GPU and I think I'll go for Asus 7970 Matrix Platinum or GeForce GTX680 DirectCU II TOP. Since the 8xxx series that will come out is just renaming of the 7xxx series. (OEM series).

I can get the GTX680 for the same price as the 7970.
3,500.00 NOK = 389.427 GBP

What will be the better choise? I'm using a single screen, 1920x1080

Thanks for your Answers

What are the prices of the 670 and 7950?

Both of those are cheaper, and will still max out frame rates of pretty much every game out there.
Wasteful really to spend so much on a 680 or 7970 if you're just playing at 1920x1080

the 7950 is 2,500nok = 278 GBP and thats good savings
and the 670 is 3,000nok = 334 Gbp. not so good savings

Neither 7950 or 670 tickles my funny bone and I really don't mind putting the extra $$ into the system.

Personally I would recommend the 680 for the extra money, if not only for Physx ^_^ The 680 and 7970 are too close to definitively say one or the other but I owned a 2600 Pro 512MB for 6 months.....drivers were hideous, then bought a 9800GT and the drivers were flawless. Tried ATI again and bought a 5870, drivers were still terrible but the performance was worth it at the time. Tried the 7950 and.......no words could describe how awful it was 2 weeks after release anyways. Long story short, Im back to an EVGA GTX 680 2GB and I have no regrets.

At 1080p, there is nothing to lose either side. EITHER way, you'll have bought a great card, and would most likely be happy with the choice. With the low amount of games incorporating PhysX into them (And even then they hit performance really hard), you can't really factor in PhysX as a reason to purchase, unless you constantly and only play the games that come with PhysX.

Go for the one thats cheaper or with better cooling. Remember, the 7970 Platinum is CHERRY PICKED for overclocking, and its components are superior to even the 680 TOP, which is also a beastly card. I would say Platinum.

Both great cards but go with the 7970 Platinum. It's slightly faster than the 680 in most games and will overclock like a beast (hopefully, silicon lottery and all that) ;)

Well, I was reading out a bit about PhysX and I found out that I was able to enable it on a AMD card with no problem. I did it on Borderlands 2 without any problems. So PhysX is no sale point for me. (And tbh the PhysX effects in Borderlands 2 was a bit, hmm, let's say childish imo)

Yes, the silicon lottery is sometimes a bitch. And I will go for the 7970 mostly for the looks tbh. It's a real beasty looking card.

All the net shops in Norway is sold out of the 7970 and will get them in stock in 14 days. If there is no more info about when the Sea Island GPU is coming out I will get myself a 7970 Matrix Platinum.

Anyone got some thoughts when the Sea Island will come?
I think it's weird that they are going to make a 7xxx OEM release if they are going to come with the Sea Island only 2-3 months after the OEM release.

The 8000 series is due early Q2 2013, I believe the launch got pushed back a few weeks. No specific date yet though.

I've been reading about the Sea Island for some time now and I hope you're right. Just to be clear the 8000 series is going to be a OEM. Meaning that it's going to be the 7000 series with a new name for the most part.

The new Sea Island is probably going to be called 9xxx series or all new name system.

The 9000 series is meant to be using the Volcanic Islands GPUs (lol), as far as I know the only cards that will be re-branded 7000 series cards are the OEM variants. So there will still be new 8000 cards using new architectures, we'll have new shiny 8970s and 8950s don't you worry :D See here for a table:

Only the OEM variants of the 8000 series will be re-brands. The regular versions will be new cards.
