7870 Tahiti LE build

Hi guys :)

I'm doing a build for my friend and his budget is £500... I recently watched Tom's 7870 Joker review, and he said you could build a very decent gaming rig based around this card for £500...
NOW.
Problem.
He also need to use the rig for video editing, and I'm not too sure about using a i3 for this purpose...
He's a talented editor, and he deserves something that won't annoy him like his current laptop does...
We we're thinking of either using a FX6300, because of the editing, but when Tom said this card was putting out 7950 OC scores, my brain melted x.x

So.
Sorry for long post, question is... What's better (60% gaming/40%editing) FX6300 + HD6950/HD7850 or i3 + HD7870 tahiti LE..?
I know the upgrade path of the i3 would be beautiful, but would he be rendering 4 min video's in 2 hours..? :/

Thank you very much lads :p

Either stretch the budget to get an AMD 8150 or 8350 with that 7870 (won't be much more) or go with the i3 for now and let him save up for an i7 that will make any AMD CPU seem useless.

If you go with the i3, make sure to go with the 3220. It's an Ivy Bridge dual core with Hyperthreading so Windows uses it as a quad core and it's clocked at a respectable 3,1 GHz :)

Yeah, these are the options I basically laid out for him, but I seriously don't know which to choose :/

How much of a difference will there be rendering a video in sony vegas? (3200 vs FX6300)

AMD CPUs have a lot less power per core compared to Intel so I'd go with as many cores as possible. An 8120 is about the same price as the 3220 where I live so I'd deffinitely grab that over a 6300.

Depends on how future proof he wants it to be. What CPU does he have in his laptop now? If he wants future proof I'd suggest him to go with the i3 for now, depending on the laptop it should be faster anyway and he has the ability to upgrade to an i5 or even an i7 :)

Yep, this is exactly what I was telling him :)
His laptop's a 2 year old Intel dual core... I think one of the celerons :/ It's a piece of crap and I even told him myself he'll be happy with anything current since everything's better than it xPP
Here the i3's are around ~£80, while FX81xxx's are £140/50, hence the dilemma ~
I think I'm veering towards i3 now, with one of the MSI boards we could have quite the future proof build :)

I would still like a number as to what kind of difference it would make rendering wise...

Selected the benchmarks that I thought were important for what he's using the system for. Beware that some are "Lower is better"

Judging from this, the FX-6300 is faster in multi-threaded tasks which makes sense as it has 4 physical cores. Because these cores have a lot less power than Intels, the i3 is faster in Single threaded apps.

If he doesn't want to change anything about the system after buying it, go with the 6300 as it's the better option between the two. If he doesn't mind saving a bit and swapping out the CPU in a few months I'd deffinitely recommend him to go with the i3 and upgrade to an i5 or i7 later down the road.

A 3570k is on par with an FX-8350 and will beat the hell out of it with some fast RAM as AMD's memory controllers... suck.

I'm assuming the blue is the FX6300..? :/ :P

Also, it actually had 6 physical ''cores'', 3 modules ~

And since he's fine with upgrading, there isn't much between the two AND the i3 is cheaper, I think I'll be building him an Intel build xD
I shouldn't let my fanboy-ism get the better of me, but I was really hoping I'd talk him into AMD xPP
Oh well, he'll get what's best :)

Thanks to all that helped! :)

Yes, sorry I forget to mention that but the AMD is indeed blue!

Pick what's best for him :)
Glad I could make myself useful and good luck on the build!

He probably wont like the idea of needing a upgrade down the road get everything he needs in one shot therefore grab the FX 8320/50 and avoid the x1xx and tbh for me personally going from 7870 to 7970 didn't feel like the performance boost I was expecting at all games I couldn't get 60FPS with the 7870 I still can't get 60FPS with the 7970.

No he's actually fine with upgrading, I've spoken to him to make sure xD
He want's to get into PC, what better way than letting him get a 3570k down the line..?

any cpu will do for now and he can update later,

and honestly if he put up with a laptop as a editing station he will be pleased with any cpu lol
