7800gtx is out now!!

x2's will cope better whenthe games are patched for dual core or in fact are released with dual core optimisations.

Until then the FX remains KING for 3d gaming, but most benchies seem to be maxxed out on those too, seems all the top beches are hovering around the same scores regardless af how high the GFX overclock is and that even a FX55 @ 3.7Ghz is limiting the bechmark scores....... for now.

It's one good reason not to spend a fortune and buy the highest clocking 7800, better to save a few quid knowing your all gonna suffer the same CPU limits - which can only be a good thing as that means it's likely that you won't need a new VGA card for while yet.

But then again, xmas will see the physics chip released, relieving the CPU bottleneck and then and only then will we see if 32pipes are better than 24 and what the real potential is of these GPU behemoths.

Of course this all come under one of MAV's crazy predictions so take it all with a pinch of salt - the scarey thing will be if I am right

Seeing as everyone benches at 1024 x 768 with no aa or af, it's not surprising really.

Thats true as well grov mate.

I guess there's gonna be a time when we all have to let go of the old (no AA or AF) and perhaps even let go of 1024x768 - I am talking about benchies here, not games.

The new era almost demands that we engage in full AA and AF and perhaps make the minimum resolution 1280*1024 - maybe then the task at will be demanding enough to be able to bench again properly and for the scores to mean something other than CPU bottleneck.

We are all doomed I tell you..... DOOOOOOMMMEEEEEDDDD!!!

Yes that will be till the following xmas when the 8800's come out with 64 pipes etc etc looool them and the fx 59 or the 5400 x2

I just want a sinlge card that can cope with 1920x1200 res with full AF - is it really too much to ask? :p

I think it proves really how less relevent amazing benchmark scores are.

Let be honest, when we bench, we go for the max score at the expense of IQ. When we play games, i hope we whack it up to 1600x1200 with loads of AA/AF.

Even 3dmark 03 is becoming prety cpu limited because of the times. GPU's continue to grow, whereeas CPU's, aren't moving as quickly.

If you look at the 7800 scores with high res and that they are more impressive. iam sure the R520 will be the same, probly more cpu limited.

Don't forget we also need the games to stress these cards, fear, Stalker, Quake 4, etc.

I agree with ya grov mate.

The future will be when all these programs take advantage of dual core power - which this time next year will be mainstream - or when the physics chip is released in December.

Either way we need to find ways of offloading the tasks from a single CPU to other dedicated processing units - more and more over the next 18months GPU power will not be as imprtant as these other factors.

Mav mate whats this physics chip you speak of? I think someone made a thread about it awhile ago but can't remeber what it is!

Mav's reliable search engine!!

Check it out - more news is that ASUS were showing one of these off in Taipei at Comutex saying that will be released in time for xmas complete with 128MB ram onboard.

Two things for me:

Firstly it looks as though it fits in a PCI slot.

Secondly - its either gonna be a tight squeeze or I am gonna have to pull the audigy 2 Soundcard and switch to onboard sound.

I liked it when it ws RAM, CPU, Graphics now were are adding anotyher component into the fold - and at £200 it's not a cheap upgrade/add-on - why don't tehy just integrate it onboard?

Oh well- here we go again, and again, and again LOL

I personally hope it doesnt catch on... Prices were discussed a few months ago and they looked to be around £300. Thats another expensive upgrade to our computers, as if they werent bad enough already. Dedicated gamers get financially raped.

:p When can I pre-order??:p

I know what you mean and we are all denying the inevitable - if only to slap our console buddies in the face with when they get the EggBox or GayStation and come round telling us how good their new toys are :D

No offence console owners :o

the technology and more importantly the prices that go with it are just getting rediculous now. I mean £700 on an FX57, £900 on two of the latest cards, £300 on this physics chip we are nearly looking at £2000 already without memory, hard drives, cases, optical drives etc then of course you've got to add in the prommy, say £500, plus watercooling gear £200, nice monitor to play it all on - £600 its just never ending...

Well....we (well...not so much me) choose to be at the top end of computing... and thats where the money is at its most serious. if it seems like its going too far...if we can come together in a large enough group and vote with our wallets then we *might* have some real influence over companies, but probably not.

We are the suckers that promote this viscious circle and we all complain about it. Earlier on in this thread I said I was going to sit this round of GFX cards out but I have sucumb to the dark side and fallen for the media hype again, my X850XT PE is up for sale on ebays (KFPCS2004) and I'm going to get my self a next gen card (don't know wether to wait for the R520 or not). Well I suppose if it wasn't for people like us we would still be running ZX81s or something like that. As long as the demand is there they will keep on making this latest stuff. If we could just control ourselves and keep slightly behind the technology curve we could save a packet, easier said than done.

So very true Zax mate - I have to say 2005 has been the year of the benchmarks so far fo me.

The buzz of continuous improvement is fantastic.

Having said that I got about 10 games that I really should have played and finished by now.

So I have a new half year resolution:

Too hang up my benching gloves (after I finished benching with 7800's) until the new physics chip comes out.

'yeah right' :D
