7800 512 SLI Help!

Heres the deal, In single card mode everything runs sweet, all 3DMarks run right the way through. However, When I switch SLI on, Every benchmark fails... Each time I run any 3Dmarks or AM3 it SHUTS DOWN my machine.

Each time I try, it shuts my machine down at the exact same point in the test. ie. in 3DMark05 it shutsdown just as the monster thing jumps out of the water. This is with no overclocking attempted on the GPU or CPU (all stock).

This is the reason for my poor AM3 score lol :)... was only running on one card.

I've been on this all night now and its starting to peeve me off :(

Please help if you can. cheers.

***EDIT*** Could it be my PSU..? Its a 600 OCZ Powerstream.

Right, I'm starting to think that it is my PSU. It is not SLI Certified and only has 1 '6pin' connector. I am using that "power splitter thingy" that comes in the GFX card box on one of my cards.

I think every1 is in bed now lol. 8)

Sorry for the delay mate... mav to the rescue.

Yep change that PSU it's letting the side down and 'might' be the reason for a poor showing in AQM3 with a single card also.

suggest you go for a PCP&C 510 SLI DLX or for total confidence (providing you have a decent size case) get the 850w - which is what I am using now.

see phil for more details.

Cheers Mav... Was looking for an excuse to buy a PCP&C 850 anywayz lol (just gotta find some money now)

Its very strange though. the only things that the PSU is powering are MB, CPU, 1xHDD, 2xGFX, 12vPump. I unplugged everything that isn't required. But it still shutsdown. If it is indeed the PSU I'm very annoyed as I thought the OCZ600 could cope with a lot and it was not cheap.

Best to get one that is SLI ready with 2xPCI-E plugs already - the OCZ was one classed as average in the custompc reviews. You could be drawing too much of the 12v rail - overclocked SD cores are hungry man.

Try running it all at stock - if it runs okay then it's a good indicator it is the CPU.

Or buy one - if it dont fix your pornlem send it back under distance selling rule (make sure you box it up proper tho).

Its all running at stock (GPU and CPU). I'm just hoping there isn't something silly that i am missing. I'm gonna try a format and a fresh install of XP tonight just to make sure. If that fails and there is nothing else I can see wrong then I will have to buy a new PSU :(

I want the 850 but my bank may only stretch for a 510 (but i don't wanna run into the same problem with that)

Why is nothing ever easy lol 8)

***EDIT*** Mav, How loud is the 850?

850w id not as quiet os OCZ (talking from experience) but it all depends on the load, normally it's quieter than the 510 (again talking from experience)

The 510 has a peak power of 700w and is rock solid - you wount be disappointed withthe purchase and the OCZ should sell well on the bay.

As Mav has said above its most definitely the psu I'm afraid - that particular one is reknowned for bad behaviour in SLI mode. I ran into problems with my ones here when I was building SLI rigs - the only alternative for me was to use the PCP&C models.

By the way, I've got the 510 in stock, the 850's and 1kw's are due next week sometime hopefully.

Ok, well it looks like a PCP&C is on the cards. Will the 510 be enough for my system do you think? Im not sure if that 850 will fit in the PSU cage on my stacker.

Thanx for all your help guys. It's put my mind to ease knowing that my PSU is known for trouble in SLI (never mind 7800GTX 512s lol) ;)

Psu Troubles

I had the same issue when i purchased my 2 xfx 7800gtxs so i ended up buying an akasa 650w with the 2 pcie connectors (4x12vrails)and she runs like a charm!!! :p So i reckon your having the same issues. Mine is very stable now.

If you can afford it get the 850w that way you should never need to buy a PSU again as long as it don't break. They are a bit on the large side though.

I'm gonna go for the 510 I think. Are you certain it will be enough for my system? I know I should go for the 850 but I can't really afford it and it wont be in stock till next week (cannot wait any longer lol) plus I doubt it will even fit in my PSU cage :).

Thanx again guys.

Hmmm, the 510 should be fine on your system. They only have a 1% fail rate I've been told. (I am that 1% btw :p) They can run a rig with big peltier, so it should be fine :)

O well, Its too late now... I gone and ordered the 850. I couldn't resist lol. Best charge up the old dremmel :D

I'll just have to Play with a single card for a week :( (time for some single card benchmarks). I Hope Phil gets them in soon lol. I've had these cards nearly two weeks now. :O

The 850 is perfect for your requirements - and you've made it into the first shipment too

Well if you had the cash for one 8)

The 850 will be running at much less load, so will be more efficient and cooler. It should also last many, many years :B
