AMD RADEON 7790
Bang for Buck ? We'll find out!
Introduction:
Released the 22nd in March of this year , the 7790 offers gamers and entry level enthusiasts an option to practical gaming for a very low price. Released with a price tag of $ 149 it appeals to PC users who can't afford a 7950 or a 7970, This little card right here has a few tricks up its sleeve in its small size .
Of course the 7790 comes with the perks of a Radeon card including eyefinity for multi monitor gaming , supports dual crossfire, and of course it's PCIe 3.0 x 16. Furthermore , because it is a newer card compared to other graphics cards in AMD's lineup the drivers are newer. So what does that mean ? Well, if you plan on playing newer games you would receive better performance from the card compared to let say a 3 year old game.
So, what's under the hood of this little card? Reference it comes with 1 GB of GDDR5 memory with a memory clock of 1,500 MHz or 6.0 G bps . The engine clock is 1,000 MHz , capable of 1.79 TFLOPS and has a 96gb memory bandwidth. It also features 128 bit memory , Direct 11.1 support and Open GL 4.2 . In addition, it has 896 stream processors, 56 texture units and a TDP of 85 watts. Lastly, the interface of the card has DVI-I /DVI-D out , HDMI out , Display port out, and VGA support.
Comparison/Performance :
So what does the 7790 directly compete against ? Well, after a few days Nvidia responded with a the GTX 650 Ti Boost . Releasing with a price tag around $169, which when compared to the AMD it's a little more but performance is where the 7790 vs. 650 ti boost fails. The 650 ti Boost comes with 768 CUDA cores, base clock of 980 MHz which can boost to 1,033 MHz . Also 192 bit of 2048 MB VRAM GDDR5 , memory clock at 6.0 Gbps, and 144.2 memory bandwidth. Lastly , the 650 ti boost has 1x HDMI, 1x Display port and 2x DVI ports.
Most of you probably are going to be using this for gaming so here are some results in a few popular games :

Is this graphics card worth it ? For the price and performance does it still have a purpose? As I have said before most of us are gamers and if you plan to play games with this card it will do you justice. I would suggest medium game settings for better frame rate . Other than gaming you might you use adobe premiere pro which takes advantage of Open CL which is what AMD GPUs dominate in compared to Nvidia. Now you can pick up a 7790 on Amazon for around $ 104 from Sapphire compared to the GTX 650 ti boost for $149 on amazon from EVGA. It is still cheaper and when used in 2 way crossfire the results are near the performance of a 7970 for a cheaper price tag . Yes the 650 ti boost may slightly out perform the 7790 but in terms of overall performance outside of gaming the 7790 in my opinion has the edge due to Open CL.
Pros:
Cons:
-Standard with 1GB VRAM (2GB versions are available)
Final Thoughts :
The 7790 delivers to its audience , gamers who can't afford high end cards but need an alternative that doesn't let down . Yes , at high settings game play in terms of frame rate is poor to mid range when compared to the 7950 or 7970 . But it wasn't meant to perform as such, it allows PC gamers to experience quality game play at a very low price. Especially with the 9000 series around the corner this year ; I would say the price of this card should go below $100 making it even more of a value. With 2 GB models the 7790 performance is slightly better due to more VRAM especially if you use mods in your games such Skyrim the extra vram would help.
For the price of this card just brilliant, performance pretty good and lets face it most gamers don't or can't get decent frame rate at high game settings . I personally game at low to medium game settings . As a result I understand and appreciate the capabilities of this card . Gaming at 30 FPS isn't bad it's just your preference as the user . Lastly, if I were to rate this card on a scale of 1 to 5 it would receive a 4.6 . Why?! Well , for the extra VRAM you might have to spend a little more and the audience this card is aiming for buy hardware based upon a budget. [/FONT]
