So i am looking to build a small server for storing things around the house, and i have this old intel E8400 chip here, but has never worked right for me...and im wondering if anyone can tell me why. First i will begin by saying i have tried this chip in 4 different mb's with the same problem, different psu's, different ram, different hdd's, and different dvd roms lol so i know all my other hardware works, maybe its a setting somewhere im missing, i dont know. but i set the system up, everything works fine untill i try to install windows, and i have used genuine windows xp, and 7. The install goes fine, untill the system does a reboot and boots from the HDD, at which point i get a windows logo on the screen, and thats where it stops. it locks up, and i dont get any farther. nothing is overheating, and yes i have tried this chip in 4 different, working builds, only changing the MB and cpu. all the other gear works fine in other systems, but not with this E8400. Anyone have any ideas?

It has been my headach for a few years now.....it was baught when it first came out, and NEVER booted into windows before

actually mate I may be of help here as I had a similar issue mine would either bsod or hang as you describe. One time it BSOD'd i got the error message and googled it. it came back saying something along the lines of a bad cd (cd in question worked fine on every build prior and after) but i made a xp cd with sp1 slip streamed into it and blammo I was up and running in no time. Now mind you this was with XP only as i dont have 32 bit win7 and the cpu was only a 32 bit proc. Hope this might help ya.

but i have tried it with 2 different coppies of windows xp, 32 bit, and 64 bit coppies of win 7 all the same thing, also with 4 or 5 different dvd/cd roms

I know mate it sounds stupid as I tried several disks as well but it worked something about the files actually not a bad disk. Sorry I didn't elaborate better lmao. if you have the time slip sp1 into your xp and give it a go.
