6990 renders noctua nh-d14 useless?

So i was playing Left 4 Dead 2 today and had my fan on my 6990 BLASTED 100% temps were in the high 70s no biggie, but my CPU temps were in the high 70s as well!!! my CPU is a AMD 965 at 4ghz. My temps NEVER got that hot with my other card 57c TOPS! and when i am not playing my CPU idles around 45c which it has been doing ever sense i OCed with the Noctua. But the back plate of the 6990 is getting SOOOO HOT my noctua sucking in 65c air! OMG!

Next time i will have to blast my noctua fans to 100% they were at 40% while i was playing. but i never thought this would ever come up. i guess the 6990 is a hot cake!

Then a second later BSOD.

I hope water cooling can fix this! Although my Koolance block does not come with a back plate. so i will have to use the stock one with the 6990. Will water cooling help ease the temps off the back of the card?

BTW the CPU is okay. I set my CPU heat load point at 75c max which is still under the threshold of the 965.

to fix the heat issue on my 6990, i used my CM storm scout case to it's cleverest.

on the windowed front panel it has mounts for two 120MM fans... the bottom one pushes air onto my two gpus, and the top one pulls air out (off them)

works a treat

Well i have been debating weather or not i will get the mesh side panel for my 600t that allows 4 120mm fans. Problem is i have NO IDEA were to get them. they are sold out EVERYWHERE!

hi. you could block the bottom of the CPU cooler as that'd stop it drawing some of the heat. The waterblock will make the back cooler. Maby section the CPU cooler off from the graphics card area with something

That was what i was considering. but because i am getting water cooling here in a few days, i will just wait.

the max temp for the phenom II 965 is 62c is it not ? , thats what amd state anyways

nope. they recommend you keep it below that. hitting 62c is already common on stock settings with stock cooler. The 965 can hit 80c. also i meant to say 70c not 75c on my mobo safety feature.

I have a 1090T OC'd to 4ghz using a Thermaltake FRIO... when gaming with a 6870 my cpu temps would get in the mid 60's socket temp (58 core temp.) Recently loaded the puppy up with fans and it helped alot! Putting a 120mm fan in the drive bays helped the most, it allowed the cooler to get a more direct line of fresh air. Problem is although most exhaust comes out the backplate there is still an exhaust overflow leading into the case.
