6990 cf vs 580 3gb tri sli?

Being both are approx in the same price range, saying both are liquid cooled properly eliminating noise and heat issues, which is a better choice for 2560 x 1600 and why?

The person makes benchmarks for other games aswell.

the real answer is that it depends on the game. AMD will gradually be improving their drivers so you should see performance improve over time. Making 4 GPUs talk to each other is rather difficult and not expected to be perfect directly out of the box. With that said, the 6990s require less power than tri sli, and are cheaper if only by a little bit.

PS: that poll is useless. unless you get people to post their reasoning, you will get nothing useful out of it. Just fanboys choosing one brand over the other.

thanks for the advice i removed the poll opinion ... yeah i watched the trubritar videos it seems like the 580s have a leap and a bound past the 6990s i wonder if thats a driver issue or more so a scaling thing or the 580s just that much better?

Firstly, the energy argument is a total waste of time. If you've got the cash to throw around on (2)/3/4 top-top end cards, the outrageous monitors and the rigs to go with it, the last thing you think about is paying the bills. And you'll know the environment would prefer you to buy an XBox/PS3, so that's out the window also.

FPS - frankly, at that end of the scale, both options are obscenely good. I don't like 2 cards in xfire or sli, and 3 I'd see as a monkey's limit to their extravegance - 4 is crazy talk and no 'real' benefit over 3.

If you got a spare oil rig, for sure, buy 4 of anything you like cos thousands mean the same as pounds/dollars to the rest of us. I want 3d, I want massive screens, I want, I want..

Eye candy, definitely in the nvidia camp. They handle textures in a different way - some would say the correct way - whereas you'd indifferently have to set the amd card to a texture level to be sure it's doing what it's meant to do. And there's physx if you want it. At that expense, I'd want physx cos.. well what's the point in spending that much cash and not having it ?

The 3g 580s are eol afaik, so that proposition doesn't really exist, I'm not aware of them coming back into circulation as they were a one-off - I may be wrong, time would tell. Would like linky from anyone who can find them in stock, as there are people looking for them.

At this moment in time, if you want to chose between the 2, your hands are tied in getting the 6990s. In a few weeks you could get the 590 equiv, the performance isn't as fps-quick as the 6990s, but they "do things correctly" and if they're under water with a power source other than just pcie x8 connectors straight from the psu, they overclock better (stock, not so well) infact they're set to smash the records again. Not on air tho. The current alpha drivers/bios are 'said' to be recommended for performance reasons, which the public haven't got yet, it's going to be hit and miss with the reviews that are already written on that basis.

For sure, the 580s in sli would bench quicker than 590s, just like the 280s in sli benched quicket than 290/5. Nvidia are certainly not the kings of welding 2 gpus on one poor pcb.

that sucks that there isnt anymore coming

i could have used that extra vram

im being told being im vram limited.. and the 3gbs are impossible to find... tri way 690s would be my best option or a 6990 abd a 6970 essentially being 6970s in tri fire

fyi guys im hearing alot of rumors about an EVGA 3gb edition coming shortly... i wonder if thats what toms hiding in that video

(Sorry to go off the main topic to the thread)

If your on about the NZXT H2 video he has an MSI twin frozr III card on the test bench, probably the upcoming 580 version? Unless he changed the card mid recording then i dont think its an evga card

(04:15-04:20 on the H2 vid just after the front door foam part if you wana see it)

no, the energy argument is not a waist of time. It is rather important to know. Obviously a 1200watt powersupply may not be adequate for tri-sli and overclocking, however, it might be enough for two 6990s.

just to go totally outrageous, why not do 4way sli with 590's and add a 5th 590 for physX ? maybe overclock all 10 cores ?

what i mean is i don't see the point of having multiple cards, humans can only see 10 fps if you go above 24 it seems like it's really moving, you don't need 700fps it's pointless, it does make your rig look nice though

probaly HD 6990 more RAM for bigger resolution, 3way SLI doesnt scal brillianly and you will see a lost of FPS in most games.

24fps is actually what films are played at which is the most crisp performance.... however i was watching the 590 videos and saw the performance and how quiet they are for what they are... and i have to ask the obvious question will i hit a vram wall? the obvious answer is yes... sooo what then?

580 will cope better with the heat increase and lack of ventilation as is natural to multiple card arrays, and will likely have better drivers (when released, as tom pointed out in the 590 review)
