Hey guys,

got a Asus 6970. The problem im having is that its not performing well. When i play games like GTA san andreas, need for speed hot pursuit i get alot of lag. In games like COD its fine. Also it weirdly spins up when viewing videos.

The driver is upto date, i have even uninstalled it and re-installed i again but the lag still remains and fan spins up randomly even when on youtube or checking emails.

what could be the problem, i have even read on the net that other have this same issue. I have Asus smart doctor installed but the temperature when playing games goes up to around 60 degrees.

Any ideas what could be the issue?

Sounds like a normal ATI card to me. Seriously though, I am using an AMD Sempron 3400+ so I can't check as I don't even have a graphics card (lol). If you're annoyed by the fan, in the control panel (of ATI drivers), choose manual fan speed and set to one that is comfortable, then it shouldn't spin up. Just remember to set the fan speed up or onto auto when playing games... don't wonna burn your card:P.

The temp looks absolutely fine, my 4870 used to sit @ 70c idle, never had a problem. The lag you're describing sounds more like a setting in the drivers, just tinker with them a bit

. I also had a problem with San Andreas, whenever any dust/smoke from cars or road came I would drop to around 5FPS, even running my Q6600 @ 3.4GHz.

Just mess around in the settings of your card, I don't think it's a hardware problem

Had i a mess around with the settings but the problem is there, what else could it be? Could the drivers be buggy?

GTA and NFS are two of the buggiest games to ever plague mankind - I wouldn't worry about them, the best rememdy is for them to patch their software so it plays above 10fps on the like of quad 580s.

As for the fan spinning up, use CCC to control fan speed and not Asus utilities aswell. Asus utilities are aweful, with constant conflicts. PC Probe for example will tell you your southbridge is overheating by getting muddled with the NB temp, or tell you a fan that isn't even connected or in the monitoring list is spinning too slow.

AMD drivers aren't actually as bad as people say, it's all the other utilities manufacturers bundle with their cards and boards that work as reliably as a hyperactive toddler building a house of cards.

Thanks, i will uninstall smart doctor and use fan control in the CCC

I've just installed MSI afterburner - its the best gpu utility I've used to date. Can even set a custom fan profile beats the ccc into a cocked hat.
