6800GS released

For those that do not know - Nvidias answer to the high performance and cost effective X800GTO is here.

It's called the 6800 Golden Sample - is clocked at 425Mhz with DDR3 RAM clocks at 1000Mhz - XFX have released an overclocked version to (no surprise there).

Shader model 3 support comes as standard.

You have to ask yourself that with a rivatuner update - would it be possible to unlock the extra pipes (as you can already do with the standard 6800) giving you 6800GT performance?

Prices are direct competition to those of the X800 with performance just below that of a 6800GT (I am given to understand that the unit is 110nm versus 130nm of the GT - could be worng though).

Far Cry at 38fps in 1600*1200 4xAA 8xAF resolutions from a £145 card - suits you sir.

3dmark03 performance is faster than X1600XT and 190 points slower in 3dMark05.......... not bad eh?

I believe that 14th November sees the release of the 512MB 7800GTX.

.

at stock it is already as fast as a 6800GT and it is not possible 2 unlock pipes and its a totally new core made on 110nm so overclocking should be pretty gd on this card! ;)

Thanks for clearing that one up mate - yeah I never thought that moving to 110nm would allow the green machine to lock (or not have) extra pipes.

110nm = Runs cooler (quieter?) and uses less power than current GT and ultra set at same clocks.

The big probs for X800/850, 6800GT and Ultra owners will have now, is the value of their cards just took a massive nose-dive.

yeh they certainly ave mate, but its all to be expected in the world of GPUs :p

ill be picking up a 512mb 7800gtx on the 14th, see how long that last :D

Seems kinda weird for NVidia to remap the 6800 core using a smaller tech node when its for a budget card. Ah well. They know what they`re doing. :) Maybe its a mega cut-down 7800 :p

I gotta admit mate I am very tempted to just jump in, someone has to Give Gollum (Cascade cooled X1800XT Xfire with cascade cooled FX57  ) a run for his money ;)

But I am gonna try and hold out til January or February when the prices drop to around £330 mark.

I think the cost of keeping the 130nm process alive is too expensive to be deemed as a budget process.

The 110nm process they are using now has been very (I mean very) successful in terms of yields and mass production costs are lower with efficiency increased.... more greens for the green machine.

I am not an expert but could it also have something to do with ROHS compliance?

Expect a complete de-stock of Ultras and GT's in the near future.
