^Did you not bother to look at the links that me and JMMP posted? In nearly every game the 5970 is beating a 7950 and equal to a 7970, sometimes even beating it

I just thought I'd chip in here, just of numbers (no real world hard stats)
Memory Bandwidth (better card preformance generally)
HD7970 has a memory badwidth of 264000 MB/sec
HD5970 has a memory badwidth of 256000 MB/sec
The HD7970 just beats the HD5970 barely.
Texel Rate (higher better AF)
HD5970 has the texel rate of 232000 Mtexels/sec
HD7970 has the texel rate of 118400 Mtexels/sec
The HD5970 has almost double the texture map elements of the HD7970.
Pixel Rate (higher better, amount of pixels written to memory in a sec)
HD5970 has a pixel rate of 92800 Mpixels/sec
HD7970 has a pixel rate of 29600 Mpixels/sec
The HD5970 trumps the HD7970 twice over in this.
Just for the sake of completness, the HD5970 has a higher power consumption than a HD7970
But not by much approx 14%-18%
My own opinion, just by the number, if the price is right HD5970 wins.
(only if you have money to burn, and buy two HD7970 to CF, then that would be the go)
All tech specs are verifiable, use google.

If you truly aren't going to take full advantage of your hardware then I guess that's all you need to look at.

I still don't get what you are saying? Are you trying to say that you can overclock the 7970? Because if so that is irrelevant as you can overclock the 5970 also

I run my cards at stock, I don't OC if I don't have adequate aftermarket cooling. As for power, I think my 2 4890s are a bit more power hungry being 190W each. The reason I'm looking at a 5970 in the first place is because it can be had cheaper than a 7970 and pretty much everywhere I look, the 5970 is well on par with the 7970, in some cases beating it. I don't care that it's old, it was already out when I bought my 4890 new in 2009, if I find one for a good price, I don't see why it's not a good choice.

if you can get it for a good price than I say go for it
if you can get it for a good price than I say go for it i own 5970 atm on my x58 platform in the signature, and the 5970 is the same with 7950 stock or boost version.
and btw i'll post u game shots if u like the 5970 is runing BF3 All ultra 70-90fps with 2/4x AA, and without AA it's runing it for 90-120 fps , Farcry 3 maxed out runs around 70-80 fps avarage that is all on 1920x1080p resolution. This card still can perform well in every new tittle maxed out ,
Now if u concider buying it u need to know that u will need minimum 700w psu, it heats a lot coz it's refferance so u wont go more then 900mhz on the core but other that that if u can find it for cheep it's an Awsome card .

This is some of the worst advice I've seen on this forum.. Suggesting a 7770 or 7750 over a card that matches a 7970... That's almost like saying get an upcoming gtx 860 instead of a gtx 590. If you're getting a decent price for the 5970 and have the PSU for it, don't think twice. Listen to seumas ffs!

yup +1 for the post m8 , i dont really see the point in compairing this gpu with the entry lvl new gen gpus, any who idk the price u are getting the 5970 but in my country they go from 150-200 euros, and 7950's are 260 euros and up, so if u can get it for around 150 eur's or lower dont miss the deal it's a hell of a GPU tbh. i'll post u more game screenshots and benches on 900mhz to see what this old dino can do
