Even though I will never use all its cores
Even though it costs a lot of money
Even though it won't be noticeably better at gaming than what I already have
Even though I have to get new memory
Even though I will need a new mobo
Even though it's fecking ridiculous

My e-peen grows excited at the very thought of the 5960X :(

Someone talk some sense into me before I buy one :(

You don't need it.

You won't use it to it's full potential.

It's a waste of money spend it elsewhere.

GPU's, SSD's, Monitors, New case, Fans, Braided cables, Soundcard, Mouse, Keyboard, Mouse mat, Water cooling, High end ear phones, Speakers, External DAC/OPAMP, Game controller, New PSU, Better CPU cooler, Optical drive for certain backups, Hard drives and many other reasons.

I suppose the best reasons why you shouldn't buy one are that:

  • You will never use all of its cores

  • It costs a lot of money

  • It won't be noticeably better at gaming than what you already have

  • You will have to get new memory

  • You will need a new motherboard

  • It's fecking ridiculous

That being said, if you have disposable income then buy one if it will make you happy :p

Sod them mate, go on doo it, dooo itt, doooo ittt.

No in all seriousness mate, unless you need the extra cores, why bother, I was gutted on first release as Id just forked out £1500 on a new Z97 build a week before, and I was tempted to return the board ram and cpu, for X99, but at the end of the day 4 cores and DDR3 is all I need, and until what I use my PC for needs the extra horsepower, that's where I'll be staying.

It's a big outlay, especially if it's just for e-peen rights, you can get that with a nice custom loop and a pair of GPU's, maybe even 3 with the amount saved.

Maybe I'll get another 780Ti instead.

I'm a bit wary of multi-GPU though, I had 2x7970 a while back and that was AWFUL. I am assuming Nvidia SLI is better? And - sorry for the noob question - will they combine together through one DisplayPort connection at a decent refresh rate? None of this 30Hz nonsense? Monitor is an LG 34UM95-P.

Grateful for any advice :)

I had dual 7950's and never once had an issue, this time round I've gone red again with a pair of 290 DD's, I love saying that DD's, it's the closest I've ever come to DD's so I'm going to milk it until the next upgrade.

I'm assuming that SLI, is the same as crossfire in that you only use the one card for outputs, so in a way linking the cards to form one, but without double the DRAM. If you've got 2 3gb cards you wont get 6gb, you will still only have 3gb.

Was milking the DDs an intentional pun there? ;)

Yes you only have to use 1 card as the output to the monitor and multi GPU setups have come along nicely since the 7970 which is still a kick ass card at 1080P :)

My man boobs are getting uncomfortably close to DDs every day lol

Yeah, for me 2x7970 were worse than 1. Stutter stutter stutter!

I know that because small socket Intel cpus only have 16 pcie lanes I would end up with 8 lanes for each card. Will this be enough?

At PCI-E 3.0 yes it's more than enough :)

Here's a chart showing the differences in PCI-E 3.0 x8 and x16 with 1 x Titan and Titan SLI, Performance difference is miniscule :)

A reason not to get one

With multiple cards the performance is crap.

Where they run at low clockspeeds they can bottleneck more than one card, more so if you get a 5960X with poor overclocking headroom.

Having said that you could get one that overclocks ok but it is a £800 gamble.

The 7970/280x drivers have improved no end since the 7970 first came out, my friend's rig runs two of them (2x Sapphire 280x toxics) and hes never complained.

Still, I'd always recommend one card unless you get a cracking deal.

780ti it is then :) and maybe a fancy new case :) and I dooooooo like the look of those msi mobs with the red and black crest on them (lemme know if they are shit - in truth there is nothing major wrong with my gigabyte :) )
