590 or 680?

Hi, I was hoping i could get some advice here. I have a GTX 590 classified and I have the opportunity do do a swap for a brand new GTX 680, I have had the gtx 590 for 18 months about and have rma'd it once already and I have never really been happy with it. I mean sure I can play all games on high settings and 3d vison is great but I do still get problems like artefacts and weird graphic patterns, also black screens and even the graphic card stops responding which makes any game I'm in go to the desktop pretty much forfeiting any on-line match i was in. From what I understand the 680 performs margnally less than a 590 at 1080 but at higher resolutions the 680 can in fact out-perform the 590 thanks in part to having that .5 GB extra VRAM.
So here are my Pros as to getting the 680:
  • Newer Tech
  • Runs cooler and quieter
  • better upgrade path as 2 680s would destroy the 590
  • Brand new as my 590 is now over a year old

And Cons:
  • 590 Performs slightly better than 680
  • Dual chip card

I am leaning more towards getting the 680 but I would love some of your opinions with as much feedback as possible. Thanks guys

Id get the 680. The 590 is a little faster but looking at benchmarks, its not by enough that youd actually notice the difference. Also, single cards will have a lot fewer problems with compatibility and driver issues. Yeah, GTX680 > GTX590 in my book.

I would say there is not much in it. But I would vote for a 680. but out of interest, what 680 is it? is it a pre OC'd model?

if you are looking to unload the 590, i wouldnt wait till the newer platform (gtx 7XX)
is released. pricing will plumit. the newer tech is a better way in power and updating
with SLI. the 590 is a great card, but its the teenager and the GTX6XX is the new
muscle. i lined-up all my 580s and sold 'em all but one. and making the best deal
on the GTX 6XX series..

Thanks for input guys, unless somebody posts an extremely compelling reason to stick with 590 before midnight I think I'll go ahead and get the 680, I like the idea of being able to add another one later on for performance boost, couldn't add another 590 classified as they don't even sell them any more.

good choice.

After a lot of googling and review reading i have found that when it comes to computational performance the 680 is very bad, even the 580 beats it. Does anybody know exactly how this effects real world performance and if it is still worth the trade given this weakness?
I have already made the trade but would like some peace of mind. Thanks guys

#1 reason to keep your 590 and not trade up to a 680.

Your board has a P67 chipset which does not support PCI-e 3.0. So you wont be able to take full advantage of the 680.

you have made the right choice by going with the 680,

better support, better heat, less power needed, more stable.

i friend of mine has a 590, i have 2 x 680, even when i had only 1 running i was on par with him in most games. and that is me running 2560x1440 and hime running 1080.

with the 680 you can add another one and be super epic,

As others have said, it would probably be a good choice to swap it if you can. Besides, what's the point of playing at high settings if you are getting artifacts anyways?

That's hardly a problem though, since PCI-e is fully backwards compatible. There's absolutely no problems with running it on a 2.0 slot at modern cards are nowhere near bandwidth bottlenecked.

Relevant.
