550D vs R3

i looked at the last two pages, didnt see this here. but it seems like it would be a popular question, so if its out there could someone direct me towards it? if this is the first, then here we go.

im going to be finally building a PC within the next 2 months give or take, and through almost a year of planning, ive gone from wanting a flashing case with LEDs and windows, to a silent case. so im debating between these two cases. they seem pretty similar and are both good cases. from my point of view idk which case is better. i honestly like the 550D looks slightly more. i actually like that silver panel that pops through the door. the R3s main appeal to me is thats its ~$50 cheaper. which isnt a big deal when im already spending ~$1500-$1600 anyways, but yea.

so i would like to hear the Pros and Cons of you gurus out there. ive been watching the review on the 550D and the R3/NZXT video as well trying to make my own comparisons, and i really think it comes down to either. that neither is really better then the other. but maybe you guys could point on the Pros/Cons of each.

thanks all. your help opinions and time are all much appreciated!!

welcome to the forum,

what you will find on this will be your preference. the cases are not identical, but do

identically the same task. the r3 has street cred as to being on the market longer.

i was all up and down to get a 550D since CES. now since its release, the "newness"

is not all that. id prefer the r3 or more so, i like the midi. i have a 800D and 650D,

CM690's, and i always wind up slobbering over the midi. the 550D is crisp and new,

R3 is here and working... and when its all done, the cost versus WOW factor will

determine your selection. its kinda like water cooling, its not the cooling its the

WOW factor to have it installed. hope this didnt muddy the water for ya, good luck

in your descision.

from what i saw, the corsair had better internals - one more pci slot, larger grommets, larger cpu cutout, and (most importantly for me) removable hard drive mounts. they both sacrifice cooling for silence, and are both among the quietest cases. stock cooling on the 550d seems to handle overclocking better though.

despite the higher quality of the corsair, i'd still go with the r3 between those two, just because in the end they're both really similar but i preder the r3's looks and price. also the define mini even has a modular hdd cage, so when (and not if) the define r4 comes out, it'll definitely have that too lol

i'm sure you'll be happy whichever you choose though ^^

for me, looks goes to the 550D. i dont like having honeycomb mesh on my case, and the R3 has it on both the sides and top, whereas the 550D is covered up.

as i said, the price for the R3 is what attracts me, knowing it will do the same thing as the 550D, but when im building an entire PC, $50 doesnt seem like all that much lol.

the worst thing about still having a couple months to go is i can sit and thing, and the more i think, its not always a good thing. ive had a year to plan this all out. but so far, for me, the 550D is taking it. unless the R4 comes out within the next couple months (sometime in June) in which case id have to decide which case i like (see what i did there. which case...lol)

appreciate your help guys

550D: 8 slots in the back, removable hard drive cages.

R3: Price, brilliant system to plug fan mounts with noise dampening material

If you can afford it, go for 550D. I read a lot of reviews of quality control issue in R3. I was in the same situation as you previously, but in the end I went for the cheaper Arc Midi. (currently it's £5 cheaper, but you must also consider the cost of adding addition fans to R3 to get the decent airflow)

Though, still there are some quality issues in the Arc Midi - there are some scratches about 1cm long here and there, luckily most of them are at the steel panel covered by the top removable plastic panel or inside the case.

One missing screws for mounting the removable harddisk case. The mesh plastic top panel is a bit flex at the rear.

yea, im pretty much set on the 550D. i like its look soooo much more then the R3. im not a fan of hex mesh or mesh in the side panels. ill be replacing the fans with good fans to increase airflow and cut noise even more, so im nto too worried about the 550D having slightly less airflow then the R3.

appreciate your opinoins everyone!
