$500 gaming headset

I think the main point is that you can spend less on proper music headphones + sound card and still have better sound quality than the gaming stuff. So really there is no reason to buy it because it dose not win on value or quality.

Perhaps you've had some bad experiences with Razer, but they do make some rather good products. (I'm not just talking about headsets here..)

It all depends on what you're looking for in a product. At $80, the Razer Carcharias is, for example, a pretty decent headset for gaming. If that's all you're looking to do with it, then why would you purchase $500 audiophile headphones that are meant for listening to lossless audio files in combination with a high end soundcard + headphone amp? That's just overkill. Audio in games is often compressed, so you will never get the most out of your audiophile headphones if you're only using them for gaming. Gaming headsets do have some pretty handy features for gaming, like an integrated mic, mic mute button, volume control, no hassle with clip-on mics / extra cables or anything like that. I'm not saying they're perfect, because they're obviously not, but they are adequate for gaming.

OP said he had a budget of $500, I suggested an Amp and cans for $500. A little Dot and a Set of Denon ADH2000 would be my choice for $500. I just offered my 2 pennies. Even for GAMING a set of music orientated headphone will out perform a set of branded PC headphones even at $80, off the top of my head there are loads of sealed, open, in ear and over ear headphones that will out perform a gaming headset. A DAC will help audio quality obviously, but you are going to have too many wires and you obviously don't like, but audio in games is getting better and better, have you played BF3 or Skyrim recently? that It annoys me when people suggest crap headphones, they say, 'they are fine for gaming,' well for you they may be, but you obviously couldn't give a monkeys left testicle about good quality audio. Its the same thing with Beats, Fanny Wang, all the celeb endorsed cans that are utterly crap, in the same vein of gaming gear, keyboards and mice etc are all the same, flashy, trashy, cheap and cater for the masses. Looks and feel are what they go for quality and price come second, again case in point Razer, Logitech, Corsair etc. I know people won't like me saying that but its the truth. OP obviously hasn't responded, so who knows if he actually has $500 to spend, but I've given my opinion, buy cheap if you wan't crap and have to buy again next year, or spend some more, get good quality from the beginning and have it last for years and perform for years.

I do not suggest crap headsets. The Sennheiser PC360 G4me is a great headset that does have features that are quite handy for gaming, while maintaining good sound quality even for music. I got them for 90 euros, and they're the best headset I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. You would know that it does not suck like most gaming headphones if you'd have tried it. And yes, I have played both BF3 and Skyrim, in fact, I'm a pretty decent BF3 player. Audio is indeed getting better, but it's still compressed audio. Do you not know the difference between lossless-audio and an mp3 file with a bitrate of 128 kbps? You will NOT get the most out of your 500$ pair of headphones if you use them only for gaming, so you might as well get a cheaper pair and save several hundreds of dollars. I would never suggest the Razer Carcharias if he would also use them for music and videos. Of course a set of music cans is generally better than gaming headsets, but they're aimed at a very different market.

Oh, and please, stop being such an insulting, hot-headed guy. What's really annoying is people like you, who judge someone by a single forum post. Well, I'm sorry, but you don't know me at all. I DO value good quality audio. In fact, I've listened to several high-end headphones and I would own a pair if I had the money for them.I know the difference between good and bad audio quality. For example, the difference between my Sennheiser CX300-II earphones and my Ultimate Ears 700 earphones is obviously massive.

In the case of gaming gear, you're saying Razer, Logitech, Corsair, SteelSeries, etc. all make bad products?

I'd kill for a 7G, or even a 6Gv2. I've had my Logitech G15v2 for 3 years now, and it's still in top notch condition, but I'm ready for something new. Would love a mechanical keyboard.

well I plan on getting a AKG k550(299 USD) and a hifiman EF2A (169usd) the hifiman ef2a is a USB DAC and tube amp combo and this setup will do you wonders and if you want get one of those mics that commentators use or something your friends will love you if you do for music it will do amazing and for games and movies it will do great plus the AKG K550 is a sealed headphone meaning very low sound leak and very little sound will get in (none if you have sound going) and if you don't want a tubeamp get a Audioengine d1 it has a great DAC or for an internal solution like others have said get an ASUS Xonar STX

If you are going to drop $500 you are wasting your money on ANY gaming headset. ALL gaming headsets are garbage quality when you compare it to an equally priced audiophile headset.
