4GB Ram or 8Gb

8gb is the sweet spot atm and as ram is so damn cheap there is no reason not to go with it

He's not asking if he is to buy 4 or 8. I think he has 4gb and wants to upgrade.

Have you checked resource manager while in game to see what memory you're using. Also what are the specs of the PC.

well if you find your self maxing out your ram usage while you play then yea, it would help. +ram is cheap anyway so i recommend you do it

Sod the gaming - I don't think I would be able to surf the web etc. on just 4gb of RAM. Chrome munches RAM for me like no other...

Specs
Intel Q8300
Asus P5KPL-AM
ATI HD 4890
4Gb 2x4Gb 800mhz ram

All speeds are stock. My question is since i only have 2 dim slots and my board can take a maximum of 8gb ram, would it increase my speeds if i got some new ram and i sold the old sticks. I need to justify the purchase, i mostly game and render videos at 1080p.

The ram im looking at is the same spec as i have now just 8Gb instead of 4 ill link it up if you want.

Quoted from the asus page for mobo:

2 x DIMM, Max. 4 GB, DDR2 1066(O.C.)/800/667 Non-ECC,Un-buffered Memory

IMO, you'd be better off upgrading your motherboard to access better ram speeds / quantities,
as the ddr2 is holding you back slightly especially on modern(ish) games

Oh god haha i must of bin looking at another motherboard, do you think i should get a ddr3 775 motherboard ?

imo save up some money and get a new rig...
my specs are pretty similar to yours and i would´t put another penny into my rig :)

Best idea.

That is rediculous. If this is the case for you, I suggest kicking Chrome into touch.

Disagree. Agree with the new rig sentiments tho.

Stick with the 4g on the kit you have. Any additional funds put to one-side to buy a new rig. Chucking cash at old rigs shouldn't really be suggested.

DDR2 isn't that cheap. Getting a DDR3 775 mobo, if you can find a decent performance one, is possible - but tbh, save your cash. It's better to plough it into new kit than newer kit.

Some times you find that the manufacture says that because 2GB dimms will have been all they where tested with. There is a chance that it might support more.

Yeh with chrome been in a sandbox it does eat up memory.

Yeah, it's Chrome's sandbox precautions that do me in. I'm terrible when it comes to closing tabs, and I watch an AWFUL lot of YouTube videos.

Ok thanks for the reply. I plan on updating my rig soon anyways but i was thinking of getting newer parts say for instance a NH D14 overclocking my system now and then when i upgrade i can carry it over to the new system, am i right in saying that would be a better option ?

IMO, No it is not, Having an ok system that is overclocked is fine but having a good system that Is still a little overclocked is better
