4820K vs 4930K Gaming Build

Hi all,

I need some advise for a colleague and was hoping you guys would be able to assist me with an answer for him.

He is going to use either of these two CPU's once we have nailed down what one is better suited for him, for Multi-GPU gaming and the occasional benchmark session against friends (nothing serious like LN2 though) He already has a i5-3570K based build and he has really wanted a LGA2011 based build for sometime (so please refrain from get Haswell answers...)

Current Proposed Build Specification:

CPU: i7-4820K OR i7-4930K
MB: Asus Rampage IV Extreme Black Edition Intel X79
Heat Sink: Corsair H100i (Running 4 Corsair SP120 in Push Pull)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro Red 16GB (4x4GB) 1866MHz
GPU 1: Asus ROG R9 280X Matrix Platinum
GPU 2: Asus ROG R9 280X Matrix Platinum
HDD 1: Corsair Force LS 120GB
HDD 2: Corsair Force LS 240GB
HDD 3: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 7200RPM
PSU: Corsair AX1200i (As the CPU and both GPU's will be overclocked)
Case: Corsair Obsidian 750D
Braided Cables: Corsair Generation 2 Sleeved Cable Kit (Red)

I have advised that he wait until the AIB partners release their take on both the R9 290X and the R9 290 before he makes a final decision on the GPU's. In regards to the CPU am at a loss as I use my 3xxx's for different tasks, and have not yet used a 4xxx LGA2011.

Thanks,

if its only for gaming haswell is the way, i mean the 4670K is a beast for the money, most of them overclock quite well, if he wants some serious cpu power then the 4770K, will chew up anything and EVERYTHING you throw at it.

But if it has to be 2011 for any reason, gotta go with a 6 Core otherwise its pointless!

It's not necessarily that anything below 6 cores is a waste, it's that if you're gonna pay for the more expensive 2011 motherboard, you might as well get the six core. If you're gonna get the quad, might as well stick with Haswell for a little less cash but about the same performance.

Remember the 4820 is basically Ivy Bridge so its a 3770K really.....

Yeah good point. Still there is something to be said for the "coolness factor" in having an Ivy Bridge EXTREME system that I admit to being a sucker for. I want to be able to brag to my friends my rig is extreme! Haha! Yeah, I'm a loser. :rollinglaugh:

I don't completely understand the sweeping statement that the 4820k is pointless.... It is VERY cheap compared with a 4930k or even a 4770k and although it's 2 cores down it does have everything else the 4930k brings to the table so for people who want to start out with two cards and have room for expansion but don't 'need' 6 cores it's right on...

Maybe i'm way out but I bought one anyway, X79 has a certain undeniable allure even as it gracefully ages.

As someone with a 3930k playing bf4.. The era of 6+ cores is upon us lads....

My 3930k + dual 580's are having zero issues with this game, people with quads and 6/7 series nVidia cards have been and are getting worse FPS than I am...

Because it's 4 Ivy Bridge cores for ~$325 vs 4 Haswell cores for ~$325. You get a little bigger cashe I think with the 4820 but you're on last gen's architecture.

Like I said, I don't think there is anything wrong with buying one. I want one just cause I've always wanted an XX-Extreme system and this is a cheaper way to do that and it's still a monster CPU but value wise, you're not getting much. Pretty much the same performance on a more expensive motherboard.

OP if you are doing any benching get a 6 core IB-E or secondhand SB-E

If you go with a quad core as soon as you run any of the Futuremark benches you will realise what a mistake you have made.
