478 and 479

hi, i just bought a mini itx board with 479 socket. and it already comes with a heat sink but i want to change it, and i just noticed there isn't alot of 479 heat sinks out there =/ ]

so i been finding some mixed answers on Google where some say a 478 heat sink will go on a 489 and some say it wont. hopefully some more experienced members might be able to help me or point where can i find socket mounting dimensions for these 2 sockets.
 
I've got a fair bit of experience with both the 478 and 479 platforms. First of all, what board did you buy? The standards for mini ITX boards and 479 boards in general were never as strict as desktop 478 platforms so we're gonna need to find a picture of the mobo. chances are if it has a rectangular black plastic retaining bracket screwed to the board around the cpu area, you'll be able to clip on a regular 478 cooler, but I'd need to see pics to make sure.

What are you gonna do with the new toy any way? :D
 
right looking at the pic thats a core2 479 not pentium m, dont think any core2 479 itx boards take a 478 sink, theres just no room on the pcb for one. I very much doubt you'll be overclocking on that board and seeing as they use laptop chips, you won't have much heat to deal with either. Easiest thing to do would probably be to put a different fan on the stock cooler.

There are some aftermarket coolers for those boards but they're very few and far between these days. You might be able to get a vga cooler like a zalman VF900 to fit if you really want to, but honestly it's not worth the effort unless noise is a really big issue, even then a quiet 120mm fan blowing over the board would probably be your best bet.

Just out of curiousity where did you pick up the board? Ebay?
 
yea, for £100 inc a t5500 and a Nexus PSM-5000 which i will some air flow for c2d.

noise isn't a big problem because im kinda thinking maybe submerging it in oil.
 
thats's not a bad price at all really. got a pic of the sink? it shouldnt need too much airflow (think about the space and cooling systems inside laptops - these chips can take the heat)

I'd really recommend against submerging it in oil, you'd never get it clean short of giving it an isopropil bath and oil is murder to fans! Also depending on the oil you use I'd imagine it'd start to smell and get bits of crap floating in it after a while. It's your hardware though so do whatever you want with it at the end of the day.
 
thought i just say not sure if any one interested in this... the heat sink that the seller provided was able to keep cpu at 45 max on load with small breeze from a 120mm fan (only like a small portion of the fan was blowing across it) and without fan passively it max out at 56c which i dont think its too bad.

Told ya that they don't need much cooling, as you've no doubt realized now there's a massive difference in the mounting hole sizes, which is why i was saying about maybe using a VF900..
