45 degrees ??

Hi all,

I recently got some new thermal paste and applied it, it's called arctic silver ceramique, or it's made by arctic silver anyway.

I applied a blob on the cpu and pasted some on the heat sink and then squashed it and flipped the pin over, the temps on idle are 45 degrees 50 on load.

Any help with applying this would be a great help.

It's very thick and it's not so easy to spread hence me going for the blob method.

Help!

Need more info... cpu - voltage - cpu cooler all just for a start.

AMD cpu's do need a bit more paste normally as the IHS is so much bigger.

Hi there,

Sorry i couldn't remember my log in, to my old account, an then i remembered it.

The voltage i have from my cpu is 1.35 volts which is stock for the 940 processor, thats in my sig and my profile.

: )

Can someone remove this thread please, no ones answering i think it's a joke to be honest.

f******g useless.

Matey chill out will you, people dont have to reply and getting funny just makes people not want to.

Try reseating the cooler though matey. Then post back and when one of us gets time we will reply.

Its a bit rude to expect replies and then get funny about it tbh.

Sorry but I thought i had been completely aired there, the paste has been powered up and down over a week ish, it has gone down a but but its still between 38 to 45 degrees, would arctic silver 5 yield a better result do you think? Again my apologies for being shirty, im not usually a moody.

One of the most comprehensive reviews on different pastes I've found for you is here

Unfortunately Thermal paste isn't something we get sent to review often so you will be relying on peoples personal preferences and experiences.

I use MX2 and Ceramique and have had no issues. I don't have the same architecture chip as you so cant really give any further accurate advice on applying it to your chip.

Nice to see you a little more chilled

What cooler is it dude? Is it the stock one? Is cool and quiet on or off?

Ceramique and arctic silver are old hat now.

Id use noctua as its nice and runny tbh.

The cooler isn't exactly top of the line, so 50C load isn't too bad. Bear in mind that as its summer you probably have a room that's a good 4-5C over what it is in winter. Ceramique works fine for me, but MX3 is also highly recommended. AS5 is pretty old school now, I wouldn't recommend due to the 200 hours curing time, and the fact there are better, easy to spread pastes out there.

Now thats what i call a response lol, I love it when you get a good few opinions, thanks everyone u'v made me feel special lol.

The cooler is a freezer 64 pro and it's not really that old, cool n quiet is off and i haven't done any overclocking at all, the bad thing i found with the ceramique as opposed to the one i was using was the spread was poor, i'm usually very neat but i felt clumsy putting that on.

If you think MX3 will do a better job then i may order a tube? Or noctua even, or both lol. With the older paste (and i can't remember what it was called for the life of me (think it was akasa something) i had it down to 35 degrees for a while and then it just raised up to 40 - 45 on idle for some reason, even though i cleaned out the case and fans / heatsinks regularly.

I hear you with the summer time heat having an impact, it really does affect it, especially during the day so maybe i'm hoping for too much from it.

I'll be getting a new cooler soon only i'm quite poor at the moment so i will need to budget too. I just wanted to get the thermal paste out of the way and then move on to other parts.

I like runnier pastes but i am willing to sacrifice anything to get a cooler cpu.

When i apply thermal paste i have used four methods, first a blob and squash the sink onto the cpu, second spread all over the cpu, third spread all over the heatsink, fourth spread a thin layer over the heat sink and a blob on the cpu (this has been my most recent attempt) the best one was the spread on cpu method but it was with my older paste and i just can't manage to spread the ceramique very well : ( Also i have a hard time getting the heatsink onto the cpu the first time, it's always awkward to seat it properly, it's like a catch and a lever system? I'm not sure if the pressure is strong enough or what.

Thanks to lasher for the link, it's very informative and has loads of info so i bookmarked it an will have a good scrutinize of it soon, Cheers for that.

I still have the stock cooler which came with my Phenom 2, would that be better than the freezer pro? (bit of a misleading name freezer innit)

Thanks for all your responses and again, i'm sorry for being a moody.

EDIT: I updated my sig so it's a little easier to see what i have : )

if you like runny TIM then the noctua stuff is the best around so i woild go for that deffo.

if your after a new cooler then titan fenrir ftw especialy for out CPU's as it will cool it no probs and you will be abot to oc it

The cooler pro is still going to be a fair bit better than the standard stock cooler, but it is still limited a little by the three heatpipe design. The bad thing about some thermal paste (non conductive) is they do tend to degrade over a couple of years. When you rearranged your case, you may have opened up more air flow from the GPU upward to the CPU, which then heats the air up. I don't really know much about thermal gunk, I use ceramique because it was on offer when I bought it. The runnier the paste you use the easier it is to get that nice thin layer.

I've been known to use a razor blade to smooth out the paste, and fill in any areas, but that is pretty much overkill. I reckon a thin layer over the heatspreader on the CPU (almost transparent layer) would be best. Even with the best thermal paste, the difference might only be 3C at best. If you are looking into heatsinks to a budget the Gelid Tranquilo sits on my Athlon II and does a pretty good job (35C on load) and that's about £25.

I'm starting to feel like I'm doing a butter comercial now...easy to spread paste

35 degrees on load sounds lovely to me, I can only pray for temps like that. Will defo get some of that noctua paste. And a cooler for 25 quid sounds good too.
