3930k temperatures

Hi,

A mate of mine is running a 3930k with the 'Intel Liquid Cooling Solution'
http://www.dabs.com/products/intel-...le&utm_medium=product search&utm_content=Q200

He's getting load temps of around 78ish degrees C and idles of around 55 degrees...

The chip isn't overclocked at all, and so this seems a little hot to me?

Is this right, or has he been a n00b in installing it?
The fan is on the motherboard header and maxes out at 1600rpm if that helps at all...

Cheers for the help.

idle temps of 78c :O I would even say that would be a little warm for load, Has he tried reseating and applying more thermal paste?

Sorry....

Not idle...

78 degrees load temps, around 55 degrees for idle...

Trying to use the word idle to say not overclocked didn't work :)
I'll edit the OP

That should be fine if your max load is under 80 perhaps a bit hot. However you shouldnt be getting near that temps on stock speeds. I am not sure about the performance from one of those systems but I would think it would be comparable to a h60 or h80 by corsair. If I was to guess I would say that cooler is not really enough for the 3930k.

Can you up the pump speeds on those units or up the fan speeds to get it to lower the temps a little. What case is it in and how is the air flow to the unit?

Air flow is pretty good all round...

Case is a Thermaltacky Chaser or something...
Still, air flow should be sufficient.

I know it isn't too hot, but considering it isn't overclocked at all I think that's very hot.

Is it likely to be that the cooler just isn't good enough, or he's installed it badly?
There's no way to change the pump/fan speeds as far as I can tell.

ambient shouldnt be over 12° above ambient.. so a 55° idle is not good.
do they have an air cooler to install to compare deltas? case heat is one
thing, but thats too hot for a stock clock.
overclock 1.4vcore.. 50° itd be considered livable...

I thought so too...
The motherboard may be getting returned for an issue, so he's living with it until then.
I'll then reseat the cooler properly and see if it still persists.

I think unless for some reason the cooler is really bad or broken, it's most likely an installation error.
The only other heatsink available is mine - which is effort to take off and reinstall - and also a waste of thermal paste.

I may make him buy me some NT-H1 though ;)

i wouldnt waste the energy in single fan rads, PERIOD!..
i understand the "need" but the criteria is much different in the 2011 socket.
i see it like automotive cooling. hes using a four cylinder rad for v12 horsepower.

james, its a stretch and more crap, but thatd be a grand idea for your HSF on his
2011, but now you gotta get a kit, yam,yam,yam... and you can sport his solution
and report how great it is... yeah, thats what itd be great! LOL
and a free tube of noctua TIM!
