3770K or 2700K or 2600K

Which one of these chips would you buy for folding? (to be paired up with say an £80 Z77 board)

The 3770K is the fastest processor on the market right now so that would be my choice. If you can get a smoking deal on the 2600K though it might be worth it. The 3770K is only ~5% faster but the 2600K will overclock a little faster so if you can get a really good deal on a Sandy, it might be worth it. Otherwise, Ivy.

**EDIT** I forgot the 3960X. That is the fastest desktop proc right now. Everybody relax. Jeez.

Whats faster? A 3930K is pretty close and wins a few benchmarks but the 3770K still comes out on top and is a lot cheaper as well.

not sure how 3770k is fastest on market, the 3930k and extreme editions are much faster unless your just talking about gaming in which case there is no difference, some even say the i5 3750k is better than the 3770k for gaming.

anyway, sheroo, get the 3770k unless you can get a really good deal on the 2600k

IMHO It depends if you want to make a good folding rig with a small Budget based on the motherboard. There are very good 2600k second handed deals in the web!.If not...go directly to the 3770k.:)

Ah yeah, forgot about the 3960X. Yeah that would be the fastest on the market. The 3930K is pretty close but the 3770K wins all the single threaded benchies and a lot of the multi-threaded benches as well so I'd say the 3770 would be faster than the 3930.

We're splitting hairs now tho. They're both pretty superb. ;)

that's true but my friend has ivybride i7 and i made the plunge into sandybridge E and my 3930K certainly faster for rendering and video editing but both are great CPUs, i would argue that 3930k will be more futureproofed than ivy if there is such a thing in the custom build world.

They really aren't that close. The 3770k is quicker than the 3820, not the 3930k.

And regarding the actual question of the thread, just go for a 3770k.

Well looking at the AnandTech Bench comparison, theyre about dead even. The 3770K wins 21 out of the 39 non gaming benchmarks and they tie on 2 I think it was. Theyre both very close in gaming too and while technically the 3770K is a little faster, its by such a small margin that youd never notice in real world game play.

So I guess the 3960X is the world performance king for right now with the 3930K and 3770K tied for 2nd place.

I´m sorry guys! But you all are forgetting one chip better from the rest! the new 2011 socket the 3970x! ;)

Are you joking or is there finally gonna be some IB-E chips coming out? I was waiting for Haswell before I jump ship to Intel but if IB-E comes out and looks promising (plus has some decent pricing) I might jump sooner. Nothing better than MOAR COARS!

**edit**

Nevermind, I found it. SB-E. :(

Thought IB-E had snuck in on me there cause I hadnt heard of that one yet.

Very interesting. I thought that the 2700K would have been the best bet for a pure folder, as I thought it might have better overclocking headroom and might pip a 3770K...

So now I know what I'm saving for...:)

It wouldn't be a pure folder, unfortunately, but an all rounder. Something I can mess around with, use with different O/S's etc - something I've been wanting to do for ages. It would use onboard graphics and almost a kind of test bench feel to it. I don't like playing around with my main rig, as I want that to be available 24/7, this is to install, configure stuff and generally mess around with various software etc - but I also want to be able to shove a configured Linux HDD in it and fold overnight maybe...
