270x @8x PCI-E

Ok so I had this problem with my old GPU but that thing was so slow it didn't matter...

(Look at ''Bus Interface'')

GPU_8x.gif

The gpu is the the 2nd top slot on the mobo, it's wired 16x and I'm using nothing else in any of the other slots. Stays like this in the top slot too, and during any bench/game.

I'm utterly lost as to what's causing this...
Any help greatly appreciated :)

Did you try running the test? Click on the ? and run it. Will probably update it to x16.

Yeah I did, sorry should have mentioned it... no go

Mine stays at x16 1.1 while gaming. Dunno why, but everything seems to run fine.

I'm actually getting lower benches than I should be, that's why it bothers me :)

Have you tried updating GPU-Z?

Yeah, this is the latest one I could find, before I updated it didn't even recognize the GPU :P

Thanks for all the replies so far but nothing I've tried has helped yet :/

Lower benchmarks? Considering a 290x or 780ti don't even max out the PCI 2.0 standard i highly doubt you are getting lower scores.

In Valley I'm getting 3fps less than a STOCK 270x (scroll to the valley bench) :/

Downloading Unigine Heaven now to test that too

------------------

2fps behind stock on Heaven too... I understand It's not the end of the world but I can't live with it... it has to be fixed :P

Oops sorry for double post :/

I'm on an old 890fxa board, made long before any sort of PCI 3 :P

I had a look in the bios and the only thing I could find even relating to the GPU were various power saving green power less watts bullpoopie so I disabled all of em but still a no-go :/

did you RTFM??? Also help us help you list specs and dont say rigs in sig.

Now you said you have a 890 board so I'm assuming its the one in your sig. All your pci-e slots for gpus are wired 16 x but that dont mean shite bro. The manual specifically says:
PCI_E1 supports up to PCIE x16 speed (when PCI_E3 is empty) PCI_E5 supports up to PCIE x16 speed (when PCI_E6 is empty) if you intend to install two expansion cards, please install them into PCI_E1 & PCI_E5 slots PCI_E3 & PCI_E6 support up to PCIE x8 speed if you intend to install four expansion cards into PCI_E1, E3, E5 & E6 slots, these four PCIE x16 lanes will auto arrange from x16/ x0/ x16/ x0 to x8/ x8/ x8/ x8 PCI_E4 supports up to PCIE x4 speed

just because you dont have anything in pci-e 1 doesnt mean it wont turn pci-e 3 into 8x. Put it in the pci-e 1 slot and I bet ya get x16 from it. Not that it mounts to a dogs danglies anyways test show theres not a whole helluva lot of difference between x16 x8 x4 and even x1

Not trying to be crass or rude but a quick read of the mobo book showed me this.

in a nut shell even though they are all "WIRED" x16 dont mean crap. it shows anything in pci-e3 makes them all go x8

slight edit: put it back in top slot and run the test let it run for a bit watch the info it'll go x8 x16 x8 depending on stress. 2-3 fps is nothing and most would say within margin of error.

Update the bios?

Already at the latest :/

See normally I'd bow my head in shame but I've literally tried EVERY slot on the mobo and in all of em I get 8x/4x :/

I've benched all of them, and I'm consistently under performing... problem is that 3fps may not sound like much, but when the stock score was 30fps, that's actually a 10% FPS loss...

ok I dont mean benches when i sat test it. There that lil ? mark next to the pci-e 2.0 x8 that tells you it may show as x8 due to the card down clocking or what not and run its test to verify it.

I know on my own mobo it showed me pci-e 3.0 @x16 for both cards. Which I was like oh hell yeah as my mobo is 2.0 lol. but both true x16 due to nf200 chip. When i ran that test is bopped them down to 2.0 lol.

Outside of that check drivers and what nots which I'm sure you have but it dont hurt to double check. also what rez ya running at??

Well this was definitely a weird one... I've managed to fix it now, running full 16x but the way I got there was quite a story.

First I updated chipset - turns out it was already at the latest...

Next I ran the GPU-Z test in every slot - before this I'd only ran it in the original slot 3... Still nothing.

Funny thing was, the only slot I couldn't test was the bottom-most one, since it's right on the end of the board so it only has a 1 slot space. I decided in the interest of fairness to test that too. Took out the PSU, and tried to install the GPU there... but something was blocking it, and the GPU wouldn't go in the slot no matter what I tried. I'd once long ago has a sound card in there but it broke on me when I cleaned my rig once - I assumed static electricity killed it. It turns out I broke a little part of the PCI-E interface on the sound card while it was in the slot, and that it had remained lodged in there. I took it out, stuck the GPU in the top slot and hey presto 16x :D

*FACEPALM* :P

Biggest shock to me are the benches now. Just by making the slot run 16x, I've gone from 29fps to 34fps in Valley... that's a bloody 17% increase! Maybe the bus speed does matter more than we think after all...

lol well that was making the top slot x8 makes perfect sense lol. Glad its sorted out as I bet you are as well. Did you regain that 3fps??

Massive thanks to all those who tried to help, had it not been a purely hardware issue on my side, one of you was bound to have been right so again, thanks :)

Ain't that an interesting story...
Note to self. Don't leave broken shit inside the PCI slots from now on:p

Wow, it's funny that the fault was with the other slot too. At least it's sorted now :D That would have been such a head scratcher if it kept going.

Note to self, try to avoid breaking sounds cards x.x

Yeah, it's cause that slot being populated brought the rest down to 8x... you know I was desperate when I had the idea to try the bottom-most slot :P
