$250aud budget, what to buy?

It's that time of year for an upgrade. Well, as crappy as this GTX550Ti is, just about any excuse is good enough. It served well for about the first 9 months but has been showing signs of artifacting lately. So, time for an upgrade.

To be honest I really dont know what is best, AMD or Nvidia. Faster is good, but the bitrate of the memory interface is also important as more data gets through a fatter pipe. Core clocks and memory clocks dont neccessarily tell the whole story.

I ask you gents, whats the best I can get on a $250aud budget? I learn toward a 7870 or GTX660.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and all will be taken into consideration as I dont really plan to make a purchase for another month or so.

I had a 560 ti that i currently returned for a seccond time since it also showed artifacts and crap.
My g/f got me a gigabyte 660 ti oc edition that kicks ass and is way tugher than the 560 ti ever was.
You coming from a 550 ti surely will notice the difference even more.

Also newer cards from AMD are rumored to be cheaper than the last generation at launch so it's a win win.
