I had taken a significant break from the pc hardware scene. I built a rig based around an AMD Phenom II X4 955 back in 2009.
Old thread here - http://ww02.overclock3d.net/showthread.php?t=26476
I added a few bits and pieces to it over the last few years. My old HD4870 died a while back, replaced it with a 560GTX. The old memory gave up the chase shortly there afterwards, I stuck 16GB of new DDR3 in it.
But lately, I got a renewed interest in the PC hardware scene and was instantly itching badly for an upgrade. Given that I do a bit of video editing now and again, and some heavily multi-threaded Analogue Electronic simulations the FX was the best CPU for the money. Intel was quite tempting, but I didn't thinking shelling out the extra premium for an Ivy-Bridge i7 was worth it.
Specs:
CPU: AMD FX-8350
MB: GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD5
MEM: 16GB Corsair DDR3-1333
GPU: MSi N560GTX Twin Frozr II
HDs: WD Carviar Black 750GB, Caviar Green 1TB, Caviar Green 2TB (x2)
PSU: Corsair HX620W
AUDIO: X-Fi XtremeGamer
CPU Cooler: CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo
Case: CoolerMaster Centurion 590
The X-Fi I've had for ages now, and it makes no sense not to put it in given the quality of the audio, but otherwise the onboard would be fine. Plus it has low latency drivers that I find quite handy for my home recording.
I'm planning on getting something like a 7950 soon, I see in newer games my 560GTX just isn't able for them once I crank up the settings. I guess my RAM isn't the best either, but it would seem looking at benchmarks, that faster RAM is at best, worth another few frames in games.
Another thing I could do with is an SSD I guess, but I'd like a relatively sizable one ie. 300GB+, and they aren't coming cheap right about now, but something like a 200GB one wouldn't be bad for the OS and a handful of games I guess.
Pictures:
Cable management could be better, but I get lazy, and the 4 hard drives don't help things. Anyway, if I get another 4 years out of this rig,
I'll be laughing, and I see no reason why I shouldn't once it's gotten a new GPU.
