144hz monitor HELP

Ok so I might be getting a 144hz monitor but I was wondering do I have to have a beast of a graphics to run this.[im getting a gtx 970 BTW] So do I have to have 144FPS for this to become useful. As you can tell I am not really experienced with monitors.

144hz makes a noticeable difference at anything above 30fps.
We can't tell you whether you will reach a high enough framerates or not if you don't tell us what kind of games you will play and at which settings. In 1080p the 970 will suffice, in 4k it probably won't.

GTX 970 will do well at 1080p. If you plan on 1440p, depending on the game, you will need to lower some settings. But at either resolution, Total War games(strategy)/FPS won't really run at 144fps. You would need 2 970's but even then you still won't get that high consistently.

Well for one, ghosting, motion blur, and tearing is reduced

If you are getting a 144hz monitor and an Nvidia GPU you mine as well get a G-Sync monitor so you can make use of it.
