10/100 & 1000 switches

(this is an @home network theory)

If u take a gigabit switch and use it to effectively extend the number of ports of a 10/100 router - am I correct in assuming that pcs on the gigabit switch when talking to each other should stick to 1g speeds, and will only drop to 10/100 speeds if they talk to a pc or internet that is on the router ?

Atm the user`s existing setup uses the router and gig switches seperately (2 nics in the pcs) in some theory that any traffic on the gig switch won`t interfere with internet traffic.

Correct. I was only just testing the network bandwidth for such a set-up yesterday. I have 5 PCs and a NAS (all gigabit) connected to an 8 port gigabit switch and get gigabit connectivity between them all.

The gigabit switch is connected to a wireless access point via its built in 4 port fast ethernet switch, which then connects wirelessly to my wireless ADSL modem router to provide my internet connection.

Thanks Tox, that pretty much means I can strip the system(s) down to 1g nics on all pcs, free up some redundant cabling and retain the 1g network w/internet.

Less cable-age = good imo.
