Any advice on improving this gaming build?

Well ehm... a case could be convenient?
Also, see if you can find 1600MHz RAM with a CAS Latency of 9. 10 is a bit high for 1600MHz RAM tbh. Do you really need 2TB of storage?

Also please answer these questions:

• What will you be using this rig for?
• If gaming, what resolution will you be playing at?
• Will you be overclocking?
• Do you need a full build or will you be reusing some old parts?

please change to a piledriver processor, you will save power and gain performance.

If you can go for the fx 6300, its worth the extra £15. two more cores, less heat output and lower power consumption

the fx4130 doesn't have the best performance, go for the fx6300 as it has a big boost in performance over the 4130 ands would enable you to make full use of the 660. Also, go for an aftermarket cpu cooler, as the stock AMD one is awful. This would be your best bet. If you can't get the cooler straight away, make sure to get one at a later date as the 6300's stock cooler isn't really very effective and is quite noisy.

I said that I'm getting my case separately. The rig is for gaming, on a 1920x1080 monitor. I won't be overclocking, and it's a full from-scratch build, yes.

I expected my processor wouldn't be the best value for money. What aftermarket cooler would you recommend?

And I may not need 2TB of storage, but I'm guilty of filling up my drives pretty quick and I figured I'll eventually need a 2nd TB anyway, so why not. How much difference does a higher latency make?

Sorry I just realized you linked me to a cooler, thanks.

First of all, please use the

Oh my bad, I missed that part. What case is it exactly? What games will you be playing?

The underlined word in his post is clickable and leads to this:

I can do nothing but agree with this suggestion. Granted it's a bit on the expensive side for a budget build, it's the absolute best cooler for the money.

Just out of interest, what case are you getting from your friend?

I'll be playing indie games, and shooters such as Battlefield, Counter-Strike, GTA, Crysis and just generally anything else that peaks my interest. The case is a BitFenix Colossus, and it's costing me only £30 I think, so that's good. :)

Yeah, considering it is £139.96 new xD. Your setup will play those games fine :).

I know haha! Great, the price is a bit higher than I first wanted with the new CPU and the cooler, £499.79. After a bit of research, you guys are right though. I'll buy the items one or two at a time and I'll be able to afford it that way. Cheers for the assistance guys!

No problem! I've done a very similar build for a friend (albeit with a 6350 and an antec case) and it is a great machine and the guy who uses it loves it :D, it plays all the games we throw at it with decent settings and fps.

Gonna need something with more grunt than a 660 for crysis or bf4 or any other newer game for that matter. Lowest i would recommend is a 7950 or 760. For a budget i strongly suggest a minimum of a 7870/660ti. Also for the CPU i would try to stretch it to a minimum of an 8320. Otherwise a I3 will serve you better with same or even more performance while drawing a lot less power(and run cooler). 8320/50 is the only CPU that can come in even close to a i5 intel cpu(sometimes on par or better) so i really recommend that too.

I know it will be more expensive but i would rather spend it now then later and save money when you realize you need more performance.

I'd still go with the 6300. http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i3-3220-vs-AMD-FX-6300

It really depends on the games that you play as to which cpu will give the better performance. single threaded games will run better on the i3 while games that use more than one core (battlefield for example) will run better on the fx6300. NeverBackDown is certainly right about the 660 although I'm sure it'll run fine on medium-low settings.

For the record, the 63xx series run games that aren't very good at running on more than one/two cores fine, such as planetside. They don't run them stupidly amazingly well, but for a budget cpu it is satisfactory. They're much better than the old bulldozer chips in single core performance.

-edit- the 6300 would be a much better bet if you want to overclock as well, I originally thought I nver would get into overclocking but the forums have changed my mind xD.

Here is a decent 7870 which will probably be a better bet for you: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-...pu-1050mhz-1280-cores-dl-dvi-i-hdmi-2xmini-dp
2 free games as well and its not an accursed xfx card. Double score! :D.
